    "Are you sure?"

    November 2, 2002  |

Version: Microsoft DirectX Drivers (Windows 98/98SE/Me) 8.1

    Summary

Are you sure you know what your doing? First of all, take the advice of the "The Outkast" and mine as well. When you install ANYTHING do your HOMEWORK first. Compatibilty is everything! Using your manufacturers web sites for Upgrades and Updates is a good start. READ ALL TEXT! DON'T ASSUME! If you have to call Tech Support or the Manufacturers 1-800-numbers for information...DO IT! Drivers for everything from your monitor to your mouse and everything in-between. All these may work, but make sure they are all up-dated and compatible with each other before you install something like DirectX or new System Drivers. Something as miniscule as a Mouse(Hardware) or a Mouse Driver(Software) has been known to "Crash" Operating Systems when something new is installed. Example: An old sound card with what seems to be a new driver might be outdated overall no matter what you do. You may need to buy a new Sound Card. Also make sure your system is stable! your OS may work fine, but files, especially Window Files, might be corrupted...REPAIR THEM! DISABLE Ativirus Software BEFORE you install something! It's also good practice to use Ctrl/Alt/Delete and shut down everything except "Systray" & "Explorer" before installing software.ie: System Drivers, DirectX...etc. Trial and error can be a pain, but use common sense to begin with. Reformatting your hard drive is no fun, but eventually you have to do it. It's like spring cleaning, but some just have a habit of doing it more than it should be done. We all know that some Hardware and Software is simply garbage. But we find this out when it's installed on a system that's in peak performance. NOT by ignorance! This also might work if your having directX problems and need to uninstall it (Depends on your OS) goto "start" > "run" > type "regedit" look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then submenu's: "Software" > "Microsoft" > "DirectX" and the value of the "Version" Delete the VALUE and NOT the Key. REinstall The DirectX that has worked for you in the past. Happy Computing!

"An all around component of Windows."

    November 1, 2002  |

Version: Microsoft DirectX Drivers (Windows 98/98SE/Me) 8.1

    Summary

Many games today for some reason, use the DirectX engine, which is just as well, since many video cards of today are built with Direct3D/Glide/OpenGL in mind... Direct3D in particular seems to be the major focus. However, 8.1 does have a few problems that people should be aware of. At default, DirectX 8.1 supports DirectX 8 mode, and earlier. However if an application has not specified what version compatability to use, DirectX will automatically assume that the game runs in the latest version of the DirectX engine, which is 8 as of current. When this happens, many older (And some newer) games will not run and will sometimes deliver blue screens, crashes, or the program is forced to use a mode that is either not desireable, (Example: Software rendering, which is very very slow.) or not supported by the user's video card. On a similar note, DirectX 8.1 was built with optimization in mind. Some programs may use DirectX 7 and DirectX 8 modes, and have the user choose one. For the most part, DirectX 7 is more older-video card-friendly, with noticeably lower framerates, while DirectX 8 is boasted for newer video cards giving higher framerate. If you're having problems using DirectX, then chances are a reinstall will fix the problem. (I'm not exactly sure how Windows XP users would fix an installation issue with DirectX, as Windows XP comes with DirectX by default.) If there's still issues, you can search your video card manufacturer's site for updated drivers which you can install that are Microsoft certified to work with the latest version of DirectX. If there are still problems after that, a last ditch attempt could be to reformat your drive and do a clean install of Windows. If after even that, DirectX and accompanying games that require the runtimes still have problems, you may want to consider contacting a PC tech or looking inside your computer to see if perhaps something is interfering with your video card or any other hardware. Another alternative, if you suspect that your video card is old and not 3D supportive, you might want to consider looking into buying a newer video card. The reason I have given this program such an average rating is due to the fact that although for the most part it runs fine, but many people have different configurations of PCs out there. (I notice that DirectX does not seem to like some processors that are made by AMD.) DirectX may not work with some PC configurations, so portability between different parts and configurations of hardware is something that is desireable for many gamers. Another reason I gave this program such an average rating was due to the fact that not many gamers would have much of a choice, (Myself included.) whether or not they chose to use these runtimes. Practically most, if not all games out today require the DirectX runtimes.
