"I can't use it, but..."
Version: Metapad 3.5
Pros
metapad is tiny and fast, and its combination of features and tools is near-perfect for my purposes. The block-editing functions are especially welcome, and the keyboard shortcuts are intuitive. It's one of the best editors I've found for cleaning up text files that have really messed-up line breaks, indents, or leading characters and spaces that have been inserted by email clients. One usually has to get a larger and more complex editor like Textpad or Notetab to get those tools.
Cons
The only con is a serious one for me, but won't affect most English speakers. There isn't language support for far-east characters, which I sometimes need. As long as things stay in English, everything's fine.

"Great text editor! I use it as a MENU program."
Version: Metapad 3.5
Pros
Metapad is the first program I open, every day, at work.
I have a file called shortcuts.txt, linked to my START key for quick opening, then I use the hyperlink feature to quickly edit & launch links to working server files, starting with my EXCEL calendar file.
I use the same file to launch IE windows to yellow pages, weather, traffic reports and map sites to use in dispatching field technicians.
To customize a typical menu, you'd have to open an editor, edit & save, then re-launch the menu program and find out if you made a mistake in editing.
With my Metapad shortcut file, I simply re-do the link and click it! Fast, easy and real-time, baby!

I won't go so far as to say that a previous reviewer is lying, but the reason I switched to Metapad is that Notepad will not handle large files AT ALL.
I had to find a new editor as Notepad complained when one of my web pages grew to larger than 40 kb!
And read the metaFAQ on the liquidninja website and you'll see why Metapad APPEARS to hang up on enormously large files.
The biggest negative I see with Metapad is the lack of print preview.
Other than that, its excellent functionality is unsurpassed in a free editor.
Take note of how long this program has been around (2002 for this version) compared to others which cost $30 more.
You MUST have this program!
Cons
No print preview function.

"Great Notepad replacement!!"
Version: Metapad 3.5
Summary
This is an excellent Notepad replacement. It has just the right amount of extra features; one of my favorites is block indent/unindent. I have no need for Notepad anymore. This software loads just as fast as Notepad, too.

"This txt is the BEST!"
Version: Metapad 3.5
Summary
Small but can open large txt files.
Can convert Windows<=>Unix<=>Unicode text.
"Primery viewer" can be set to Internet Explorer - great for hand made large Html sites.
Metapad is Notepad plus some very nice things. In fact all you need.
Not far a way from Notepad but still better than anything else.
I will recomend it to everyone why likes Notepad. But needs to edit multi-OS ASCII text and large hand made Html sites.

"Just what I needed"
Version: Metapad 3.5
Summary
Notepad had disappeared in XP. I know a lot of others have had the same problem, but could not find a real solution for fixing it. This does the job.

"Finally..."
Version: Metapad 3.5
Summary
I spent way too long looking for a simple Notepad replacement. It seems like that would be easy to find, but most of the other editors really try to cram in too many features, which loads down the program and creates potential for bugs. NoteTab, for instance, is totally inconvenient to use as a Notepad replacement simply because it crams in too much stuff. MetaPad does the job and does it well.

"Too SLOW"
Version: Metapad 3.5
Summary
Whatever features MetaPad has (and it isn't much), it is just SLOW with large files, heck, it is even slower than notepad.
I didn't have too high demands but opening 3mb file quickly is a MUST, this program faced with such file simply hangs. -
"Why bother?"
Version: Metapad 3.5
Summary
There's so few features in MetaPad that I'm amazed anyone would bother downloading it. It's only marginally better than NotePad. Better to use EditPlus or UltraEdit, both of which slaughter this puny app.
