"Will not open excel spreadsheets that have been..."

      January 05, 2007   |   By typebarsmack

      Version: Not Found

      Summary

      ...password protected
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I download Mesa 3.1 and ran it on an intel-based iMac running 10.4.7. When attempting to open an Excel 2003 (PC) spreadsheet that had been password protected, a screen came up that read (paraphrasing here): Mesa can not open password protected spreadsheets.
I then attempted to open an Excel 2003 (PC)spreadsheet that hadn't been password protected. This caused Mesa to quit. My spreadsheets usually contain no less than 10 worksheets...maybe this was the problem. The formulas I use are usually limited to SUM & PRODUCT. Very simple.
Looks like I'll give NeoOffice (http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/en/index.php) a shot.
Mesa might be okay as a stand-alone application that keeps to itself, but in a world where Excel is still so prominent I think Mesa fails.

"Zoom is a good new feature"

      Summary

I have just downloaded the new version. It seems to be a useful update because the Zoom makes it much easier to use a large worksheet. I find Mesa a great spreadsheet, it's uncluttered and simple. OK, if you have very complicated needs you will be better off with Excel but for my own recordkeeping it's just fine.

"A very nice alternative to Excel"

      Summary

This is a very enjoyable program to use. The interface is both attractive and clear, the program is quite powerful, the documentation is good and the price is pretty hard to beat. I have not had the problems other reviewers have mentioned with instability.

As I'm not looking for a spreadsheet that can do everything, high-level spreadsheet users may want to evaluate for themselves to see if it has all the features that they're looking for.

There are a few oddities and quirks to the program (I'd like be able to direclty enter data into a cell for example), but this is the the best Excel alternative I've yet seen for OS X after evaluating a few of them.

      "Unstable"

      Summary

Based on good product reviews and satisfaction with the demo version of this product, I purchased a license the other day. After trying to use it to modify and create several spreadsheets, however, I am completely frustrated. Formatting overwrites other conditions. Format a column as currency, then apply borders or a background color - currency format disappears. Reapply currency format and color disappears. Apply a single border and get double borders instead. Application has quit several times while working on a spreadsheet. The amount of the spreadsheet that is visible is inconsistent. Usually, I cannot see or get to rows above 30 or 40, sometimes can return down to access a few more rows, sometimes can see everything (even after finding the very odd preference setting for how many rows/columns are displayed). The product site offers no technical support contact information. The documentation is very good, but doesn't address the errors I keep running into. Lovely interface and customizable toolbar options - I really want this application to work, but so far it's very unstable for me.

I just bought a license a few weeks ago for version 3.0.9, it did all the calculation stuff I wanted just fine anyway but this new version seems to bring in my Excel files better. ie it doesn't crash any more! Nice clean uncluttered interface as well.

      Summary

excel substitute. Doesn't always get formating right for importing from excel (well, currency fields, anyway), but everything else spot on. Very easy to use, good help files, intuitive layout, and proper OSX integration means it looks so much nicer than excel and has a very nice feel. Export to excel is also pretty damn good. At this cost, the extra features in excel that are missing don't matter.
