"Miles ahead of expensive licensed based alternatives."

    March 29, 2010  |   By pianoman6954

    Version: MediaCoder 0.7.3.4616

    Pros

-Support for SMP based transcoding on multi-core setups (benefits even from HT)
-Support for CUDA with far more control than the next available paid competitor.
    -Drag and drop Que
-Relatively large selection of device based presets.

    Cons

    -Unorthodox Setting Wizard
-Steep learning curve when working with difficult HD formats
    -Lack of support for DIVX

    Summary

For quick transcoding ques for devices this program presents an easy interface and SMP allows multi-core users to realize the performance benefit that has been marketed to them from the start. I find that the program allows the user to make mistakes when combining certain options such as selecting improper containers for particular formats. I also noticed less than satisfactory results as far video quality when using CUDA as an execution platform however I attribute a great deal of this as a result of overall FPU precision. Overall this is a great relatively easy to use program that does what a lot of other fall short on.

    "Did not work for me"

    December 26, 2009  |   By fundoo123

    Version: MediaCoder 0.7.2.4535

    Pros

Did not really work for me - so hard to say

    Cons

Tried to covert flv file to mp4 (for iphone) but it did not work.
Furthermore, I do not like software that automatically takes me to a website.

    Summary

Give it a shot, if you have time - but do not be too hopeful.

"Good Media Converter, but often shows errors."

    October 11, 2009  |   By hansenqian

    Version: MediaCoder 0.7.2.4510

    Pros

Can convert video and audio files from many different formats and containers. Quite useful when you want to size down the size of a video by altering the bit-rate.

    Cons

Crashes often, mainly due to the encoders, probably stability issues. Sometimes can't encode from a particular format to another, requires work-arounds. Fairly complicated to use for the average user. Sometimes encoding will change the resolution.

    Summary

This is a great product for those who understand all of the different video formats, audio formats, and containers, and how they mesh together. It might be a little hard for people unfamiliar with video formats to use. Even though it will crash when the wrong combination is selected, it works well, and is a good media converter.

    "Use Version 6"

    September 15, 2009  |   By cannman61

    Version: MediaCoder 0.7.2.4500

    Pros

I cannot find any good things about this product; very disappointed.

    Cons

Too bloated, too many pretty colors; things that made it work on earlier versions are gone; many crashes; error messages when trying FLV to AVI conversions. grabs too many resources; something is wrong with AVI files, sound, no video.

    Summary

The earlier versions worked fine (version 6 or earlier) . This version is bloated, demanding on resources; slow; rejects FLV conversions; and many crashes. Stick to Earlier versions.

    "mediacoder slippery slope"

    August 7, 2009  |   By nothappyy

    Version: MediaCoder 0.7.1.4450

    Pros

    free
    usually excellent x264 transcoding

    Cons

irritatingly complex/unreliable mpeg2 transcoding for set top DVD/xvid boxen

    Summary

Version 0.7.x is adware in part: it spawns a XUL window to fetch additional transcoding settings via it's "platform" while showing ads in a frame

Version 0.7.x also contains "open candy" a needless component from optional malware install that "collects anonymous usage" information. It can be deleted. Great. Why leave it behind at all?

MediaCoder can no longer be downloaded as an archive... what other nefarious actions are performed by the installation wrapper? none now.. but who is to say that will not change?

MediaCoder, according to its developer, is no longer open-source, but it continues to be hosted on sourceforge.
