"There is no such thing as a free lunch"

    July 6, 2014  |   By Mikeymikemikey

Version: Media Player Codec Pack 4.3.1

    Pros

Most media works, apart from ma4 files, but this is because apparently WMP doesn't like this file and won't play it ¬_¬.

    Cons

People are complaining about ad-ware and Malware: tool bars, homepage change etc...
Using the Cnet, when you next step, makes sure you click 'Decline' or 'I don't accept' if it's a option, on all the special offers, aka BS that will blot your computer. The button is darken out, making you think you can't click it but you can, it's very cheeky.

Next the software's own installer also has crap. You can click easy install, detail just allows you to select components so don't worry too much. However I would do it and make sure that the (321) classic media player isn't installed and/or the pointless system tray icon, unless you like to clutter your system tray.

But make sure you click 'Custom' not 'Express' install! Because this will install the crap-ware. Under 'Custom' uncheck all the tool-bars and crap. then click next.

    Summary

I haven't notice any changes so above should work. Also for all free software always look for extra crap-ware. This is how they make money. They want your data so they can sell it to marketers or sell advertising space and display crap on your PC. There is no such thing as a free lunch, so look closely when downloading free software.

P.S. I found going to the website directly didn't try to install so much crap, hopefully they didn't do it surreptitiously.

    "Beware - Installs unwanted softare"

    July 1, 2014  |   By tgolden2

Version: Media Player Codec Pack 4.3.1

    Pros

    Contains codecs

    Cons

Installs unrelated software, and changes your internet search engine without asking - a major no-no. Based on what I know it did, I'm fearful for it may have done I don't know about. CNET isn't doing its job keeping stuff like this off its site.

"Avoid at all cost. Malware boobytrap"

    June 20, 2014  |   By exhumen

Version: Media Player Codec Pack 4.3.1

    Pros

    None whatsoever.

    Cons

    -Hijacks Default search engine
    -Hijacks browser's startup pages
    -Install more than just codecs
    -Installs malware
    -Installs toolbars

    Summary

Downloaded this so I could watch Blu-Rays on my new Blu-Ray drive. When installation completed, I noticed it install more than codecs. It installed a media player. It changed by default search engine to some sketchy 'Entrusted' engine (Entrusted also came up as malware on a Malwarebytes scan). Installed other various bits of malware and skethcy files on my computer.

    "Ad-ware. Not worth it."

    June 12, 2014  |   By randydodd

Version: Media Player Codec Pack 4.3.1

    Pros

    Can selectively install certain elements.

    Cons

Installs ad-ware and spam-ware whether you like it or not. Pops up with each click. Ads. Spam. This thing is a virus.

    Summary

Skip it. Not sure why CNET even allows this to be a download.

    "Terrible program with malware"

    May 12, 2014  |   By FlierSky

Version: Media Player Codec Pack 4.3.0

    Pros

    None. This is mnalware

    Cons

Took better part of an hour cleaning malware out of my computer after loading this program that didn't even work. It changes internet options without asking including browser search engines.

    Summary

Don't load this unless you want a headache.

"It works for me (win7 pro /asus board / amd chip-set)"

    May 10, 2014  |   By rwbplastic

Version: Media Player Codec Pack 4.3.0

    Pros

Does not screw-up existing programs, while adding the ability to play lesser known fie formats.

    Cons

None that I have come across

    Summary

It's free and it works. If you need it then download and install. If you can already play everything you have then do not try to make a good thing better by replacing a known working codec with one which you have no experience. Do not try to fix something that is not broken.

"DID NOT INSTALL DUE TO NAG"

    May 2, 2014  |   By Cragg2

Version: Media Player Codec Pack 4.2.5

    Pros

    Comes from CNET

    Cons

mediaplayercodecpak.com has been producing a nag on my computer asking if I want to update and when I say no it asks if I want to stop reminders, where I say yes. It has been popping up on every re-boot and also every now and then. I cannot get rid of it and I cannot find where it comes from. I don't know if this is because of WIN8 incompatibility or what, but I have never downloaded the software itself, so I don't know why this nag is there.

    Summary

I never thought I would say this about a product on CNET, but here it is - BE WARY

"Works, but no way around adware."

    April 5, 2014  |   By orangustang

Version: Media Player Codec Pack 4.3.0

    Pros

Allows Windows Media Player to play different types of files.

    Cons

    Asks to install adware/toolbars.
    Installs other adware without asking.

    Summary

Under advanced install, the installer asks to install three additional programs. I think they were all Yahoo! products. One was definitely a toolbar. I unselected those, and the installer left them out. The installer did, however, change my browser homepages and install several more programs that I did not ask for. I don't know if this was all part of the optional media player install or what. The installer gives you options for a bunch of different things, most of which are abbreviated and fairly unclear. At no point does it ask whether you want it to change your homepage and then protect that change with adware, but that's exactly what it ended up doing for me.

Some of the installed programs (two, I think) can be uninstalled separately. The rest don't go away until you uninstall the codec pack.

If there's a way to install this thing without adware, I've given up before the solution could become apparent. VLC works fine without this garbage, so I will continue to use it for virtually everything instead of WMP.
