"Works, but no way around adware."

    April 5, 2014  |   By orangustang

Version: Media Player Codec Pack 4.3.0

    Pros

Allows Windows Media Player to play different types of files.

    Cons

    Asks to install adware/toolbars.
    Installs other adware without asking.

    Summary

Under advanced install, the installer asks to install three additional programs. I think they were all Yahoo! products. One was definitely a toolbar. I unselected those, and the installer left them out. The installer did, however, change my browser homepages and install several more programs that I did not ask for. I don't know if this was all part of the optional media player install or what. The installer gives you options for a bunch of different things, most of which are abbreviated and fairly unclear. At no point does it ask whether you want it to change your homepage and then protect that change with adware, but that's exactly what it ended up doing for me.

Some of the installed programs (two, I think) can be uninstalled separately. The rest don't go away until you uninstall the codec pack.

If there's a way to install this thing without adware, I've given up before the solution could become apparent. VLC works fine without this garbage, so I will continue to use it for virtually everything instead of WMP.

"Works but heaps on the Adware Bunk"

    February 25, 2014  |   By cryptkicker

Version: Media Player Codec Pack 1.1

    Pros

This codec pack does play all the formats it claims (5 star!)

    Cons

Heaps on pop-ups and adware, altering my Google homepage into a cluttered ad-space and popping up an annoying ad with every click (0 stars there)

    Summary

Difficulty of removing all the adware is not worth the convenience of the codec. Better to just convert the files using After Effects or some other conversion process.

"Works Great. The guys above didn't follow directions."

    February 21, 2014  |   By MuffChop

Version: Media Player Codec Pack 4.3.0

    Pros

I really like Windows Media Player but it didn't play all the files i needed like flac or flv. This allows it to play these and alot more.

    Cons

Cnet installer and codec pack ASK to install other software.

    Summary

The dissenters above did not READ or FOLLOW directions. Use the custom install instead of the express install. This allows you to play flac, flv and other files WMP doesn't usually play. It doesn't install anything unless you allow it to. In plain simple English it gives you the option to NOT install these things. UNCHECK THE BOXES THAT ASK IF YOU WANT TO INSTALL TOOLBARS AND SUCH. Dummies...

    "Does what it says"

    February 18, 2014  |   By RCOS_Development

Version: Media Player Codec Pack 4.3.0

    Pros

After installing Media Player Codec Pack, I was able to play many different unusual and uncommon media formats in Windows Media Player. It gives me a reason to ditch an alternative media player.

    Cons

The installer is one of the dreaded Ad-Supported "Stub" Installers. You need to READ CAREFULLY during the installation and UNCHECK or DECLINE all additional offers, or you will be infected by malicious software.

Upon uninstalling Media Player Codec Pack, (I was testing on a VM) Windows Media Player refused to open after that because "dghelp.dll was not found".

    Summary

Codec Packs are a great idea, as they give extra functionality to media players. However, they may damage your system as programs such as WMP aren't built to support these new formats. It is best to install an alternative media player such as VideoLAN VLC media player to play uncommon media formats.

    "weighted" the star review system.

I selected half a star [abysmal] upon posting, it returned as a whole star :-)

    "VIRUS HACK MALWARE"

    January 25, 2014  |   By TD-2288

Version: Media Player Codec Pack 4.2.9

    Pros

It plays but installs unwanted other high jack software behind the scene. The more you use it the more it high jacks and installs other malware software without consent. CNET has LIED. This is Malware, a trojan concealed virus of endless other software that also high jacks your internet. Thats the good.

    Cons

You better have a restore point prior to downloading this garbage trojan horse malware. If not you will spend a lot of time resetting and uninstalling this virus. You will have trouble resetting your your browser until it is all gone. If you did a restart then it also adds permanent items to start up as well as over rides to boot up.

    Summary

I wonder how much CNET was paid off to approve this stinking virus download? This was no end of problems with hidden unwanted unauthorized extra software. I am still removing additional software this thing installed without my consent or even notice.
