Editors' Review

This handy extension for Internet Explorer makes a great addition to your Web security arsenal. SiteAdvisor draws from an enormous database of Web sites that have been checked out for spyware threats, malicious cookies, and questionable marketing ploys. Sitting quietly at the bottom of your browser, SiteAdvisor indicates the safety rating of your current site. Green is for safe sites, yellow for sites with some questionable practices, and red for particularly dangerous sites. The color-coded rating system also annotates your Google and Yahoo search results, providing advance warning of potential drive-by spyware installation and other dangers. An available online breakdown shows what kind of testing underpins the danger assessments. We also like the extensive site profiles with user ratings, which allow you to check out a site before risking a visit. In some cases, SiteAdvisor errs on the side of caution, labeling sites as dangerous because of minor infractions, but these are few and far in between. This free extension is an obvious choice for IE users who want better Web security.

"This is censorship in the worst way!"

November 04, 2006  |  By tcombs

 |  Version: McAfee SiteAdvisor for Internet Explorer 1.7.0.53

Pros

Nothing!

Cons

McAffee has 'blacklisted' sites by branding them RED, and under the red X, McAffee has cleared the same sites by downloading the site's content, checking it and labeling it SAFE! They use RED X to show on sites, when there they suppose adware is in the site's advertising banners, which the webmaster has no control over. Google and Freeze run many ads that contain ad on programs, such as google tool bar and McAffee considers this to have adware. McAffee itself, has an this ad on to google's tool bar that they want you to download to push their blacklisted sites as bad and advertise their name. These sites are penalized for merely having ads to support the FREE content they provide visitors. Soon all free sites will be pushed from the web by these big companies and only 'For Sale' stuff will be available to download. This service they provide is more of a promotion of McAffee as a 'protector' of surfers, which is contridictory to what their findings are of each site. If you find a red site, please read the ACTUAL findings whether adware has been found on the site or not, rather than in just their advertising.

"Worked until McAfee took it over"

December 10, 2006  |  By DeltaBreeze

 |  Version: McAfee SiteAdvisor for Internet Explorer 1.7.0.53

Pros

I liked it until I tried to upgrade to McAfee's version.

Cons

I used and liked the OIGINAL program for some time. Then McAfee took it over...and I made the mistake of downloading THEIR update. The update wouldn't install. Instead I got a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! I then uninstalled and reinstalled the original version, but now it won't work properly. And when I close my browser down the Runtime Error box (siting SitAdvisor) comes up every time...and this is with the original version that worked fine before I downloaded McAfees "update". You can check their forum and will see others also have this Runtime problem. McAfee blames Microsoft, but it's NOT a Microsoft problem...it's McAfees!

"Nice prgram"

November 08, 2006  |  By Truejamaicanyouth

 |  Version: McAfee SiteAdvisor for Internet Explorer 1.7.0.53

Pros

This program tells you which stie is good or bad. Works for all search site engine. Such as google.com, yahoo.com, ask.com, etc. When you see a green check mark next to the site link, it means its an good site and you can go in there. If you see the yellow circle with a ! in the middle, it means that that the site is good in some ways but also can be bad in another way. If you see a grey circle with the ? in the middle means they didnt tested it out so becareful when going in. The red circle with an X in the middle means that its a bad site and can have spyware, virus, and tracking cookie files. Sometimes Mcafee siteadisor stops you from going to a site that will automatically mess up your computer just for going in that site. Very good program and recommended for people who like to visit sites or look for sites to download programs and things like that.

"Not sure if I would use it...may need more work"

November 06, 2006  |  By TruckTurner

 |  Version: McAfee SiteAdvisor for Internet Explorer 1.7.0.53

Pros

I think the intention was good...It's always nice to know if you're surfing on a good or bad site as far as spyware/adware/malware is concerned. There may be some bugs in the program, but I'm not a programmer so I can't be sure of that. I'll check back after a few more reviews have been made on this product to reconsider if I want to use it.

Cons

I tried it on IE6 and it didn't quite work so well for me. It somehow corrupted some of my Firefox files. Had to do a system restore and to reset custom settings on Firefox in order to get it working properly again (took a few hours). Also, had to uninstall/reinstall Firefox 2.0.

"Not a useful program, especially for Freebie users."

November 05, 2006  |  By tonybeaudion

 |  Version: McAfee SiteAdvisor for Internet Explorer 1.7.0.53

Pros

The concept is good but not the results.

Cons

I would not recommend this program! It does not accurately identify all aspects of the websites it monitors. It seems to target sites with screensavers and games. Basically anything Free. If this program continues and viewers use this as a reference then Freebies sites as we know it today will not exist. You will need a Credit Card each time you connect to the Internet. It falsely, or at least it's reviewers, falsely identify anything that is contained in a program as Spyware, Adware or PUPS, even those with a opt out option.
