Even the most advanced antispyware security can't guarantee your computer's safety, because most programs scan your site for digital nasties after they've already taken root. This ingenious Firefox extension warns you about covert spyware and browser-hijack attempts as you visit a site.

SiteAdvisor operates as an unobtrusive signal in your browser interface, turning green if the site is safe, yellow if it's suspect, and red if it senses threats or annoyances. The same coding system applies to Yahoo and Google search results, inserting a red, yellow, or green icon next to each link. Clicking these icons provides full diagnostics of the sites' threats, including links to other suspect sites, high spam counts, and the number of dangerous downloads.

We also liked the URL highlighter, which displays site rankings directly from your search engine, helping deflect drive-by installs that may initiate as soon as you type a URL. In our tests, SiteAdvisor turned out accurate and reliable results, and though it doesn't have a wide array of features, we urge any regular Firefox user to try this no-cost extension.

"I love this product!"

May 23, 2006  |  By DUKESofHAZZARD

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

It is wonderful because it gives you a green, yellow or red flag warnings depending if a site is green for safe to enter, yellow for possibly dangerous to enter, and red for unsafe and do not enter this site. It's free for unlimited use and worth trying it. It works fine without any problems on my Internet Explorer browswer.

I'm glad it is not owned by Microsoft, Yahoo or Google.

Cons

One of my many FF addon plug-ins/extensions disabled the full functionality of SiteAdvisor on my Firefox browser and I'm unable to figure out why it was disabled. Maybe it was disabled by one of my anti-spyware products or my GhostSurf Platinum...who knows?

"Takes the guessing out of web search results... but it's now corporate owned!"

May 20, 2006  |  By Wonk

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

Ever do a Google search and wonder about the results that come up? Some of the results are legitimate, but a few are out to infect your computer or steal your information. Enter SiteAdvisor. It roams the web, signing up for different things, and keeping track of what happens next. It logs dangerous scripts, spam mails, and many other nefarious outcomes of visiting particular sites. The result: Every time you search the web, the search results page comes up with a rating icon in green, yellow, or red. Put the mouse pointer over the rating, and get a quick report of what to expect when you visit the site and use the services there. Very useful in dodging potential pitfalls and time wasters while searching the web and choosing among the results.

Cons

SiteAdvisor was a former MIT student project but McAfee purchased it in April 2006. Is there any reason to believe a corporation like McAfee may hedge the results of SiteAdvisor or start charging to use it? Time will tell. The SiteAdvisor icon in Firefox changed from "SiteAdvisor" to "McAfee SiteAdvisor" with no warning, so it's safe to say this service is now at least partially supported by some unobtrusive advertising. Besides this, SiteAdvisor sometimes causes a few seconds of delay while delivering results on web searches.

"Great for new users, kind of annoying for more experienced users."

May 07, 2006  |  By genie_15

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

Tons of people use my computer, half of them can't spot an obvious virus lying in wait. Site Advisor helped with this as it warned them when they were going to clcick on an obviously malicious link. Like I said, it's good for inexperienced users. It's not overbearing, so it doesn't get in your face. Works for both Firefox and IE.

Cons

No real problems.

"Spyware"

Pros

You can find third party cookies on detail page.

Cons

As I noted this is legal spyware. It logs your browsing habits in return for free advise. And it is not a very good advise either.
