McAfee has gone and done something drastic for the 2010 version of its basic security program, and we're not talking about the new name. McAfee AntiVirus Plus, which last year was known as McAfee VirusScan Plus, has a new interface that redefines how to streamline the complex and varied tools currently available in A-list security programs.

The the new and unusual top-down design is surprisingly easy to use, with clear delineations between features. Potentially confusing names have been jettisoned. For example, firewall settings control how you access the Web, so they're listed under Web and E-mail Protection. Also, McAfee stands out for not only color-coding what your status is, but also adding in what that means. The "Your computer is secure" message is bolstered by "No action required," a helpful tip. Click on any of the four categories just below the status bar and the pane just to the right reveals links to drill deeper into your security status. Mouse over the big subcategories at the bottom and a general status message appears next to the name. Click on one to for more configuration settings.

The biggest feature update comes to McAfee's real-time defense engine, called Artemis. In the 2010 version, it works in conjunction with McAfee's SiteAdvisor to scan downloads as they occur. The scans include using real-time URL, IP address, and domain name data in conjunction with a blend of blacklists, whitelists, and cloud analysis to evaluate downloads for threats before they land on your hard drive. According to McAfee, its 2010 suite has huge leaps in performance, due in part to selective process loading when you boot, and in part to flagging already-examined files as safe. Overall, we found McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2010 to be a much-needed and long-overdue improvement to McAfee's consumer protection line.

"doesn't do a lot and is a resource hog"

April 16, 2010  |  By batvette

 |  Version: McAfee Internet Security 2010

Pros

free with ATT Yahoo DSL

Cons

picked up a virus anyway it still can't find. a huge resource hog with appx 10 processes running all the time. seems to run scans at most inconvenient times, slowing system to a crawl, and has this little update window that is pesky as hell.

Summary

I'm assuming this is the same program "mcafee security center" offered with ATT DSL. Used to give us Norton which I found to be superior. Immediately upon switch to Mcafee I noticed system slowed down with all these mysterious processes mcafee has in background, but I'm running an older system so that may not be the case for everyone. I guess you get what you pay for! Now adding AVG free and several other malware finders to fix what Mcafee still doesn't recognize (a trojan that keeps reloading- spybot programs find it but can't remove it) Overall not impressed with Mcafee.

"Run Away As Fast As You Can"

August 15, 2011  |  By TBMTBM

 |  Version: McAfee Internet Security 2010

Pros

It's not a virus

Cons

They wanted to charge me for help in getting rid of a virus that their system allowed on my computer.... they couldn't care less.

Summary

Waste of time... waste of money..... are they even on the same planet as their customers?????? I would have been better off pouring immodium over my computer.

"Just overall horrible"

March 27, 2011  |  By Rain9832

 |  Version: McAfee Internet Security 2010

Pros

It's an anti-virus. I mean it's not that great, but it's a program to get rid of basic viruses.

Cons

Slow. Very slow. It also flickers protection settings on and off. One minute I'm protected, then the next, "You system is not secured. Firewall is turned off"

It was not from a virus, it was just the bad program.

The support on their site is bad.

Summary

I do not recommend this program to anybody. I would recommend Avast! or Norton to somebody.

"They charge 2 remove MalWare they allow onto Computer."

March 10, 2011  |  By maryanne1147

 |  Version: McAfee Internet Security 2010

Pros

I do not have a Pro for this software.

Cons

I watched as McAfee "allowed" Trojans, Back Door Bots etc. onto my computer. Customer Service, including Supervisors would not help me unless I paid $95 for them to remove what THEY allowed onto my computer.

Summary

McAfee is Very Bad Unsafe Software. I watched as McAfee pop upa "allowed" Trojans, Back Door Bots etc. onto my computer. Customer Service, including Supervisors would not help me unless I paid $95 for them to remove what THEY allowed onto my computer. They charge to remove MalWare they allow onto your computer. No matter how many times I called and who I was transferred to it was the same story. There should be legal action taken against companies like this.

"Warning ! Never buy this ! It could be very dangerous !"

February 23, 2011  |  By Nick66

 |  Version: McAfee Internet Security 2010

Pros

When I first bought it, it looked nice. Not so disturbing like other virus scanners, except that it was slowing down my system quite a lot.

Cons

McAfee didn't find this very serious trojan. The "online live" function didn't block the trojan from installing, and neither did McAfee remove the trojan afterwards. Maybe because it was in fact McAfee who installed the trojan ?! (see facts below !!)

Summary

McAfee is EITHER totally useless, so it couldn't find this very dangerous trojan (spying for my online banking data successfully). Though I always kept the program updated automatically !

Or EVEN WORSE - it was McAfee itself who installed the trojan in my system, probably by one of those automatic updates ...

I got reason to think so for 3 facts:

First fact: McAfee SEEMED to work proper all the time. But when - after the infection - I wanted to do another scan with McAfee, the scan started for some time (making believe it works) and then suddenly finished the scan, not having done anything (but also not crashing !). I wonder if any Trojan can have caused such kind of time-delayed reaction ... I rather think, only a McAfee specialist can do such specific thing. McAfee WANTED ME to believe that everything is okay, though nothing was okay at all !

Second fact: I never had such kind of serious problem BEFORE I installed McAfee. And I just installed it lately ...

Third and most important fact: By default, McAfee DEACTIVATES the automatic Windows warnings that are telling if Firewall or Virus protection is disabled. This I found out by some anti-spyware tool that gave me that warning right after the installation of McAfee. So why would McAfee do that ? First I thought that for some strange reason, these warnings are in the way of McAfee to work proper. But now, after the infection, it got clear to me that this cannot have been the reason. The only logical reason is to expect that McAfee wanted to have full control, bringing down all other security systems, so that there will be no protection anymore, once that McAfee brings the trojan to life ...

Yeah, many people say that the anti-virus companies are the biggest producers of viruses, to make sure a good business. Until now I just couldn't believe it. NOW ... I seriously believe that McAfee could be one of those criminal companies indeed.

Of course there is no proof - but there are serious indications that should be warning enough for everybody NOT to buy this product !!!
Especially as it sucks anyway !!!

"Very UNDEPENDABLE with inconsistent performance"

February 13, 2011  |  By idennisu

 |  Version: McAfee Internet Security 2010

Pros

Price depending on where you buy it. Siteadvisor feature.

Cons

Slow when performing its tasks. Inconsistent at detecting problems. Update system very poorly designed.

Summary

2010 was the second year that I used Mcafee for all of the computers in my home. It seems to me like the software engineers and techs at Mcafee took a year long vacation in 2010 and still haven't returned for 2011. The performance of the software was a complete opposite of what I saw in 2009. The first year (2009) that I used Internet Security it caught everything that was thrown at it while working actively or during system scans. 2010 was totally flipped. I cannot even begin to count how many times I've had to perform some type of maintenance on the 5 computers that are regularly used in my home because of a virus or trojan that got past Mcafee. Along with that problem was an annoying consistent popup telling me that my computer was at risk because real time scanning was turned off. I finally realized that it was off because the program turns it off whenever it is installing or needs to check for updates. Sometimes when this pop up appears I actually have to tell the program to check for updates instead of it doing it on its own. I have even had occasions when the program did not turn real time scanning back on after installing the updates and I had to turn it on because again I got the annoying pop up telling me it was off. I finally told Mcafee your fired! and switched to Norton for 2011. In closing I'd say If the phrase "You get what you pay for" was true, than Mcafee should be paying us to use their software.

"Works well but eats up resources."

December 01, 2010  |  By WakaChipWakaChest

 |  Version: McAfee Internet Security 2010

Pros

It's just like any other virus/firewall protection system.
Automatically updates and scans.
Does a good job as a link check for malicious sites.

Cons

But it really does eat up memory and your computer system processes.
I wouldn't suggest it for a net book for that reason but it may work fine on high powered laptop (like the XPS) or desktop that has a lot of resources to share.

Summary

All in all it's a decent software suite. Personally, I still prefer my ZoneAlarm and AVG Anti-Virus but decided to give this a try.

This is a nice software suite for a computer user who may not be all that savvy when it comes to computer and network security or may not really want to be bothered with it. In other words, a good work horse for the ones who do not want to be bother with the working.

Oh yeah, it will constantly e-mail you about when your subscription is going to end and telling you how important it is for you to extend your subscription *they want money*

I have a 60 day subscription that started a week ago and they have been annoying the crap out of me about it.

Once again, this may not be the best for net books due to the resources this software eats up and net books aren't particularly powerful.

Pros

"Easy to use but useless when infected."

November 08, 2010  |  By s1lv3rblaz3

 |  Version: McAfee Internet Security 2010

Pros

it's popular by all.

Cons

Virus could attach to McAfee any time. it crashed on several computers in a local school area.

Summary

It's popular like Norton but under the popularity lies holes in the coding. The program only scans and cleans known viruses. Any new unknown virus , the program will skip over it and let it damage the computer from the inside out. Besides that, the booting up on the computer takes forever with certains computer programs that are windows related. Some updates take forever and slow up even after disk cleanup and disk defragment the computer to move faster. it still moves slow. besides that, tech support can do it's best to help but majority of the time, it leaves you hanging. so save yourself some money from getting a crashed computer and having to buy a new one. Because McAfee will do that for you.

October 12, 2010  |  By butchie12

 |  Version: McAfee Internet Security 2010

Pros

It does appear to be eaiser to set up and use but some features confusing

Cons

more pop up questions than a spamer. some features confusing. difficult to work in some circumstances

Summary

A 3 year subscription came free with my new dell xps 8100 but had nothing but problems getting it to work with the computer and windows7. It could have been me but heard similar complaints. I switched back to Kaspersky and paid at the top end of AV programs.
