      "Superior ripper/converter. Very recommended."

October 11, 2010   |   By Geoffrey Dean Jackson

      Version: Sbooth Max 0.9.1

      Pros

Extremely high quality of CD to AAC conversions. With the right settings, 330+ Kb/sec rates possible. Cleanest error correction I've ever used.

      Cons

Touchy at times. Can crash with corrupted files without warning. Albumcover downloads can be tedious to use. Manual input of song titles not as easy at it could be (use of the TAB on the keyboard not useable).

      Summary

All-in-all, it's a damn good program. It will convert CD's to MP3, AAC, Apple lossless, etc and do a good job. Depending on the settings, you can remove nearly error possible from your CD's, and convert them with the highest bitrate possible (I have AAC files in my collection that nailed 380 kb/sec, and they are still compatible with my 5G iPod).

If you're picky about sound quality, like the filesize of compressed or lossy filesystems, this program will make darn sure the copy you have is of the highest quality.

"Didn't work very long for me."

      December 17, 2009   |   By 850vine

      Version: Sbooth Max 0.9.1

      Pros

I liked the amount of file formats it would convert to and from.

      Cons

      It kept quitting.

      Summary

It worked OK the first couple of times I tried it, then I fed it some probably corrupted wav files that caused it to freeze up. Ever since then when I try to open the program it quits.

      Version: Sbooth Max 0.8.1

      Pros

A huge variety of audio formats to choose from and very quick. Easy to do large batches.

      Cons

Initially difficult to figure out how to convert to specific formats.

"Price is right but a little bit unfinished"

      Version: Max 0.7.1

      Summary

Max is great - so many codecs - doesn't crash my computer. But the tagging is a mess in comparison to iTunes.

A really pity as the author seems to be a very good coder and is extremely generous creating three high quality freeware audio applications (Play and Tags). I'd rather he charged something and finished up tagging with an option to pull in the iTunes tagging.

After hunting around, I recommend anyone looking for properly tagged Lame encoded MP3's use iTunes-Lame Encoder (now on Google code and open source after Alcor also lost interest).

I have also used/tested Audion (PPC only, also dead) and XLD-GUI (absolutely toxic).

      "Doesn't work with Leopard 10.5"

This thing does absolutely nothing. What a piece of junk. There are no "formats" available to convert a file into. How are you supposed to use this software? Does not even work with Mac OS X 10.5.

Needed to convert FLAC to MP3... there are various plugins for itune that don't seem to work. This converted without a hitch, sems to be able to do it for a wide array of formats, such as APE format.

      "Nice improvements"

      January 24, 2007   |   By ddg.alextek_dotmac

      Version: Max 0.7.1

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Used Max for a few months now, starting with 0.6. This version is a noticeable improvement in many respects- in particular, this version is noticeably faster. My only feature request would be a way to select the output format when encoding rather than having to go into the app's Preferences to do it. This goes double now that the Custom Encoding option, which opened up the Encoder pane, is gone. A Select Encoder option when ripping (maybe with an Advanced button to tweak settings) would be handy. But otherwise, a very nice app you'll probably use a lot.

      "Superb software!"

      Version: Max 0.7.1

      Summary

I'm an audiophile and after months, maybe years, of f*arting around with SoundGrinder, MusicMan, Switch, and myriad other audio codec handlers (including iTune's own dreadful internal mp3 ripper), I discovered Max and its pals, Tag and Cog. Look nowhere else to meet your needs in handling a wide range of codecs and other audio tools.

Sbooth, the developer, is the leader of a community that cares deeply about high-quality audio on the Mac, and he has forums that are a key site for knowledge about Mac audio. What a generous and brilliant soul!

      Bravo!
