Editors' review

This is one of the rare Web privacy applications that works right off the bat, but it suffers from a slow proxy server. Mask Surf Lite's very simple interface is primarily a tray icon pull-down menu, and the option menu is just seven checkboxes and three pull-downs. Intermediate to advanced users will spend little time setting options, but novices would do well to watch the helpful tutorial.

Mask Surf Lite's privacy approach is just setting Internet Explorer to use a proxy. You can quickly add Firefox and some instant messengers to also use the app. The program includes quick options to clean your cache, cookies, addresses, history, and forms with just a click on the main pull-down menu. As with any proxy server, your speeds will vary wildly based on load and server capability. Our tests found surfing speed acceptable, if sluggish at times.

Advanced users may wish for greater flexibility choosing options and the ability to choose a specific country for the proxy. Novice users will like the simplicity of install and operation. All users will find the 15-day demo more than adequate to test Mask Surf Lite.

    "Well worth the money"

    March 07, 2010   |   By thulemanden

    Version: Mask Surf Lite 2.5

    Pros

Very easy to use and requires no network protocol knowledge. The fee is a one time expense and not an annual expense like several other services.

    Cons

Not much, but it comes with very few languages but then again the text is limited.

    Summary

For the current version I don't recognise the problems CNET editors had. The issues must have been fixed. Lite ed. worked better for me than Pro that had some problems with the country list. The software diligently warns, that using the TOR worldwide network slows down the surfing and thus not a fault in this software.
