Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a surprisingly effective freeware antimalware tool. It's a relatively speedy malware remover, with the quick scan taking about 8 minutes even with other high-resource programs running. The heuristics engine proved on multiple computers during empirical testing that it was capable of determining the difference between false positives and dangerous apps.

The app has some nice features rolled in, too. It supports multiple drive scanning including networked drives, context menu options including a scan-on-demand for individual files, and the FileAssassin option under the More Tools section for removing locked files. The interface is simple, but pleasant-looking and well-organized. Tabs live just below the oversized logo, with few options per tab to keep down the clutter. The installation process was fast enough, but interestingly offered up the well-kept changelog and an instant definition file update.

Do note that the real-time protection is restricted to the paid version, as is the scheduler for updates and scans. Overall, though, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a responsive malware remover that does what it should with a minimum of fuss.

"Great antispyware and antivirus engine!(Free version)"

May 09, 2011  |  By Spectre722

 |  Version: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.50.1

Pros

1. Great antispyware/antivirus engine.

2. Most resource efficient free antivirus to date due to not having real time protection.

3. Perfect for "second opinions" to make sure that your primary antivirus doesn't miss anything.

Cons

1. No firewall if you get the free version.(The paid version does have a firewall.)

2. Does not update automatically, you'll have to click that "update" button yourself.

Summary

The free version of Malwarebytes is best used as a second opinion antivirus rather than primary defense. The reason being is that this program does not offer real time protection or a firewall. (You can use the windows firewall though, but having an antivirus that constantly scans your computer for antiviruses is an important part of computer security.)

This program is absolutely perfect for getting rid of viruses that make it through your firewall. If you are not an advanced computer user, you can simply just boot your computer into safemode and do a scan with malwarebytes and it will almost certainly get rid of the virus, especially if it is one of those pesky rogue antispywares that gives you all of those annoying pop ups.

Some of you may consider the free version of malwarebytes to not having a firewall as a bad thing, but for others it can actually be a good thing. Being able to have an antivirus that only starts up when you tell it to makes getting a second opinion easier and less of a hassle. You can have your regular antivirus and firewall on at all times, then after a scan you can boot up malwarebytes, update it(You have to click the update button yourself though, it doesn't do it automatically.), do a scan, turn malwarebytes off, then you are done. It's that simple.

How good is malwarebytes virus and spyware engine exactly? It seems to be right up there with the top tier free security programs. In my experience, it has only missed on threat that Microsoft Security Essentials picked up. However, if let's say, your main antivirus was taken over by a virus or destroyed by a virus, the free version of malwarebytes can make a great back up to help you get rid of the virus due to its low profile. In fact, windows doesn't recognize the free version of malwarebytes as an antivirus because malwarebytes only turns on when you tell it to. You can really catch some viruses by surprise with this program.

I have no experience with the paid version of Malwarebytes but I do know that it includes a firewall and automatic updating. I can not provide any testimony as to whether or not it is worth the money, but I am sure that the paid version is also a competent product.

Now, I have said many times that I recommend the free version as a "second opinion" program and not a primary one due to the lack of real time protection, particularly on windows xp and vista computers because their firewalls aren't quite as good as window 7's firewall. There is, however, one exception to the rule that comes to mind. If you have a computer that does not have the memory required for a full fledged security suite, then it is permissible to use malwarebytes as a stand alone program, but be sure to have your windows firewall on and to do an update and a scan daily before you turn off your computer.

In a nutshell, Malwarebytes is good. It picks up just about everything, it is perfect for getting a "second opinion" on whether or not your computer is infected, and if you have a computer that doesn't have the resources for a full fledged security suite then malwarebytes will work for you as a stand alone program. I think that every computer should have this program installed at least as a second opinion to make sure that your computer stays clean.

"Avast misses a great deal"

April 04, 2013  |  By GERRY RAINS

 |  Version: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.50.1

Pros

When I installed avast several years ago I wondered why I was getting virtually no positive. I uninstalled it and installed AVG. AVG picked up 6 positive. I did not remove them. I uninstalled AVG and installed Avira. It picked up the same 6 positives. However it only was able to delete four of the six so I uninstalled Avira and went back to AVG which eradicated the two files that Avira had found but could not delete. I stayed with AVG for awhile and then went with an entire suite, Kaspersky with malwarebytes running twice a week.

Cons

I have no complaints against Malwarebytes. I think that it's an excellent program.

Summary

It never hurts to "get two opinions" and I use Malwarebytes to check what Kaspersky may have missed. It usually picks up something. Of course I also use CCleaner which IMHO is one of the best free pieces of software on the market.

"Great Initial Clean up"

May 30, 2011  |  By high_desert

 |  Version: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.50.1

Pros

Does a great job for a great number of Malware critters. Easy to use, updated on database often for current and new nasties, and does the job quickly.

Cons

While it catches most of the lines of infection and secondary anti-malware tool is recommended. Does not remove all root kits, and occassionally a more in depth removal process will be necessary.

Summary

Recommend it to customers along with a capable Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware program, Microsoft Security Essentials comes to mind. If you use the free version it will require manually running but if on a budget it will definitely do the job. Anything not removed by this program will required a level of expertise that may require a trained professional.
