    "Great database, poor usability"

    June 22, 2013  |   By jowie

    Version: Mactracker 7.1.3

    Pros

Looks great, great icons and style
A wealth of specs on everything Apple
    Very useful comparison charts

    Cons

Usability very weird, especially "My Models"
Buttons do different thinks depending on context
    Database not updatable over-the-air

    Summary

I find Mactracker a very useful app, and it looks really nice, but it's just a shame the usability doesn't hold up and could do with a good rethink. For example, if I open up a model, especially "This Mac", why isn't there a button where I can automatically add it to "My Models"? I'd expect the + Add button to do this, but it only works properly if you are in one of the My Models screens, otherwise you get a Smart Category creator... strange. Also, when adding another model to My Models, it would make much more sense to me to see a list of all the models to choose from *before* I enter the name of it, not the other way round.

The other disappointing thing is that this app requires constant updating. Every time a new model comes up, you have to download a 30-40 MB file. Mac or iOS. It's just a database, so it's a shame that it doesn't just check for a DB update each time you open it. An App Store update should really be for extra features or bug fixes.

On the plus side, it does look really nice and I do very much like the new compare feature.

"Program hangs when attempting to run."

    March 3, 2013  |   By mitech66

    Version: Mactracker 7.1

    Pros

    Who knows?

    Cons

Program hangs when attempting to open. Don't know whether this is unique to this version. I assume so since the ratings on previous versions is very high. I'm running the Lion OS.

    Summary

The program hangs on attempting to open - requires a Force Quit. Thus pretty worthless.

"How did I live without this?"

    February 23, 2013  |   By robbosir

    Version: Mactracker 7.1

    Pros

    Perfection!

    Cons

None that I've found so far.

    Summary

I've been doing Apple IT for over 20 years and am embarrassed to say I just discovered this app. With Apples ridiculous model identifier, model number and order number, this app just made my whole life a lot easier when trying to figure out which Mac a new client has over the phone.

    "Essential Mac Hardware database"

    December 20, 2012  |   By David Blaikie

    Version: Mactracker 7.0.1

    Pros

A database of all the hardware apple has ever produced.
Historically interesting but also useful for comparing recent Apple products.
The desktop app mirrors the iOS app faithfully.

    Cons

When Apple launches new hardware the App can be a bit slow to be updated

    Summary

If you own an Apple product and you want to see how it compares to other Apple products then Mactracker will help you out.
