"No way to back up to network drive"

    October 5, 2012  |   By TerryMZM

    Pros

    Free and free

    Cons

Can only back up to directly attached storage or DVD's and only as an image, not a daily or weekly update able set of files.

    Summary

This would be good for an initial snapshot of a new computer to allow restoring it to new or nearly new condition in case of a major operator mess.

I have been using the Free version since 2009 - Although backing up to a network drive could be made a bit more obvious, it has always worked. The trick is that the "Folder" location can be any location such as \\Myserver\backup\pc1. Personally, I make a separate directory on my home server for each PC in the house and run a weekly scheduled task to backup the computer. I also have a small batch file to rotate the backups so that I have the most recent four backups stored. The paid version has a much slicker way to do this and can manage backup storage much easier.

For what it's worth - I'm finally going to bite the bullet and get a paid version. This software does what I need - it's simple, and I have used it (more than once) to do a bare metal restore. It just works!
