"It worked for me and was fast"

    October 25, 2012  |   By Doug Hazlewood

Version: Macrium Reflect Free 5.0 build 5154

    Pros

I finally gave up on EaseUs Todo Backup Free and researched some others on CNET. I was hoping to avoid having to burn a disc or discs since I was temporarily hooked up via the DVD connectors (as it ToDo Backup recommended). I found a detailed how-to video on YouTube about Macrium Reflect Free.

I gave it a shot and once it started the new hard drive also stopped appearing on 'Computer.' But, it was not writing to the old drive, so I let it keep going. Looks like it did the trick. I don't know why ToDo Backup kept writing to the old HP Recovery partition or 'losing' the new drive.

    MRF software was also faster.

It cloned my drive and it booted to it after I removed the old one.

    Here's that video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWM79HCzdDA

I was glad to find such a detailed explanation and I guess I didn't have anything hooked up wrong (but, don't hold me to that).

    Cons

    None I can think of

    Summary

    It worked and is fast.

I am a 58 year-old who has minimal PC fixin' experience. Unfortunately I know more about PC's than either of my two college grad children. Never imagined that would be the case. And my computer-whiz brother-in-law lives two hours away and was VERY busy (for real). And my nephew (who might could have helped) is off at college.

I figured cloning my failing hard drive would not be as easy as it sounded like, but in the end it was (finally) with THIS software.

    "Great program"

    October 6, 2012  |   By MJRagsdale

Version: Macrium Reflect Free 5.0 build 5154

    Pros

Seems to do everything I need as far as backup/imaging is concerned. Works flawlessly while I was having troubles with Acronis working correctly some of the time.

    Cons

None that I am aware of at this time.

    Summary

I was so impressed with this program that I purchased a 3 computer upgrade to the paid version.

"No way to back up to network drive"

    October 5, 2012  |   By TerryMZM

Version: Macrium Reflect Free 5.0 build 5154

    Pros

    Free and free

    Cons

Can only back up to directly attached storage or DVD's and only as an image, not a daily or weekly update able set of files.

    Summary

This would be good for an initial snapshot of a new computer to allow restoring it to new or nearly new condition in case of a major operator mess.

"Great For System Image Backups !"

    September 29, 2012  |   By tonester59

Version: Macrium Reflect Free 5.0 build 5154

    Pros

Easy to use, once you get used to some of it's somewhat counter-intuitive aspects. Can clone your entire disk or make a system image that can be copied to an external drive or DVD using a user-determined compression rate. Using medium compression, an image that took Windows 7 x64 software 45 GB to create took only 35 GB with Macrium.

    Cons

'Does not do incremental or differential backups, which are limited to the paid version. The interface can be a bit confusing at first, as it is both similar and different than other back-up and partitioning programs, so I'd strongly suggest making friends with it's online help tutorials.

    Summary

Since I'm only interested in making backups to restore my OS in the event of a catastrophic event, this program is ideal. ( I make separate backups of files, etc.,using Win7's built in software.) I like the fact that you can back-up onto higher capacity DVD's as opposed to CD's (are you listening, EaseUS ?). I've never had a problem with the program, and the company seems genuinely interested in ongoing product improvement. I highly recommend it to all users.
