    "Great software!"

    March 2, 2015  |   By harster

Version: Macrium Reflect Free 5.3 build 7277

    Pros

If English is your language, this is the best choice.

    Cons

Backup is a complicated subject, period, not Macrium's fault.

    Summary

I bought the paid version because I wanted native English language documentation and tech support, plus all the features. I was not disappointed. For the first time in three years I have backup that I trust, I have tested, it works, I understand what they are saying, it's really fast.......... Need I say more?

    "Does The Job"

    January 22, 2015  |   By PeteCress2

Version: Macrium Reflect Free 5.3 build 7220

    Pros

    - Once you figure out that a backup can be Full or Incremental, it's pretty easy to use
    - The ability to specify many different sources seems tb quite good

    Cons

    - If you have a Full backup and 30 Incrementals on a disk, and the Full gets corrupted or deleted you have lost everything. It just won't work with a partial set....need the Full.

    - It could use a facility that, upon request, combs through an entire backup set and lists every version of every backed up file... so if you know a file got bad data, say, a week ago you don't have to mount Incremental-after-incremental looking for the latest good version.

    Summary

It's the least-bad backup utility I have found in recent years. The original Retrospect for MacIntosh was the best because it had the ability to show all versions of all files in one view. But I guess that's gone forever.

"Very good B/R tool - some issues w/USB sticks"

    January 22, 2015  |   By Allan C.

Version: Macrium Reflect Free 5.3 build 7220

    Pros

    Easy to understand GUI
    Offers clone capability
    Can build boot drive
    Free

    Cons

    Has some USB stick issues

    Summary

Let me start by saying the Reflect version I downloaded here did have an image verification capability. The USB stick issues that I referred to are 1) it can't build a bootable USB stick. This is actually a Windows related problem in that when Reflect makes a drive bootable, it creates a new (small) partition for the boot files. Win7 doesn't allow USB sticks to have more than 1 partition thus Reflect is unable to build its' dedicated boot partition on a USB stick. 2) Reflect doesn't see USB sticks when it does its' drive analysis for launching the GUI. I am including my workarounds with the caveat that I am sure there are other methods to solve these problems so don't take my input as definitive answers. 1) Allow Reflect to make a spare External drive bootable. I had already done this on an External USB drive to use in making a clone of my Primary boot drive. The External USB booted up without issue and all the cloned files were available for Reflect to clone them back to my internal drive should I have so desired. Copy the files from the Macrium boot partition to the USB stick. Mine booted up without issue. 2) Use Reflect to create an image on some other disk then copy the image to the USB stick. I dropped my image on the same External USB I used for the clone. The data transfer took over an hour for a 21GB+ image but I suspect the USB source and destination drives were suing the same channel for data transfer thus throttling down the speed. Booted up the w/the USB stick and the image was seen as available for restoration. Now I can pull the stick, store it in my kit drawer and have it as a Recovery backup to my Recovery backup. Yes, I have Recovery paranoia.

    "Can't verify image"

    January 11, 2015  |   By paul1149

Version: Macrium Reflect Free 5.3 build 7220

    Pros

    Seems to work smoothly.

    Cons

Cannot verify an image. Would you trust your system to an image you weren't sure of?

The interface is very clunky. The interface of the download stub, confusing.

    Summary

Prog has an excellent reputation, but the Cons here, especially the lack of verification, are not acceptable. If they want to exclude incremental backups, that's their business decision. But verification is basic functionality.

    "excellent product"

    December 2, 2014  |   By pfeldman

Version: Macrium Reflect Free 5.3 build 7220

    Pros

    1. One can clone a disk without taking it offline.
    2. The user interface is simple and intuitive.
    3. I can clone a 2 TB drive in less than 3 hours.

    Cons

So far I haven't encountered any problems with this software, but I've only been using it for one month. I will update the review if I do encounter any issues.

    Summary

Rather than summarizing the information above, I'd like to compare Macrium Reflect with some of the other backup/cloning software packages that I tried before settling on Reflect:

    - Clonezilla: I was never able to make this software work. Error messages were useless gibberish.

    - Acronis True Image 2014 free and paid versions: Acronis True Image worked on some Windows 7 and Windows 8 computers but not on others. And, when it did work, it was often slow to the point of unusability, e.g., when cloning a disk, it
would sometimes report that it was 10 percent done after running for over 12
hours. When I contacted Acronis Technical Support about this, they denied that
I had a paid license and refused to provide support.

    - XXCLONE-Home: If one clones a bootable drive, the clone is not bootable.

    - EaseUS Todo backup: I was never able to make this work.

    Updated on Feb 16, 2015

I've had more experience with Macrium Reflect, and would currently give it 3.5 stars out of 5. I've encountered two main problem areas:

    (1) The 2 TB limit of the MBR partitioning scheme is pushing people towards the use of GPT. But, Macrium provides no practical method for migrating from MBR to GPT. (They offer two complex schemes, but despite extensive effort, I was unable to make either work).

    (2) When one clones a bootable drive, the clone has all of the files that were present on the original drive, but is often not bootable.

"Well I used to like it because it worked"

    November 22, 2014  |   By Dajoca100

Version: Macrium Reflect Free 5.0 build 4033

    Pros

It sometimes does what it's supposed to do, but it has let me down on occasion.

    Cons

It has occasionally (in the past) been unable to see any partition on any drives and even if it can, has failed to recognise the drive backups it created and therefore would not restore them.

    Summary

It maybe great, but when it lets you down, the impact is huge.
Clonezilla may not be as user friendly, but it doesn't screw it all up.
