Editors' Review

Backing up your computer shouldn't be a tedious task. Macrium Reflect Free Edition makes file backup incredibly easy thanks to its intuitive user interface and helpful wizards.

Installing the program did confuse us a bit, because although it's a free program, it refers to purchasing the program, and you're given a confirmation number. On top of that, the program recommends that you view the online tutorials before getting started, but you might have some trouble deciphering them unless you speak Italian. Luckily, the built-in Help menu is more than adequate and written in English. The user interface is simple but professional in appearance. Intuitive commands line the top of the window, and tabs reveal options for disk images, partitions, XML definitions, and scheduled backups. A helpful wizard guides you through the process of setting up your backup. We were able to quickly select our backup location (local hard disk, network, CD/DVD). Before proceeding, it provides you with a summary of your backup so that you can see the backup type, destination, compression type, and password protection. Here is also where you can make advanced configurations to the compression levels and file sizes.

The program did slow our computer while it worked its magic, and we were unable to browse or work with other resource-intensive programs at the same time. However, we were able to watch the backup process, and the program successfully backed up our C Drive without a hitch. If you're looking for a simple but reliable backup program, we highly recommend Macrium Reflect Free Edition to all users.

"Simple, Effective, Professional!"

Easy Install, Simple & Feature Rich Interface, Can Load Image Files as Mountable Drives (ISO)

WinPE Disk Creation Problems, Minor Potential Confusion with Scheduled Backups

Version 5.1 Professional (64-bit): I purchased Reflect 5 after using it the first time. It worked perfectly in backing up my Windows 7 (64-bit) OS and all drives. It creates a seamless image of each drive either as a single file or multiple files (I did one for each drive). The interface is intuitive and simple which is how it should be. It lists all the drives with capacities and 'used' space. A minor thing is that it lists the drives beginning with "1" when the system or OS begins with "0" but since Macrium shows the drive "label" and "serial#" (nice touch), you won't get confused about which drive you are affecting. This is only important if you're using Disk Manager or some other tools that lists drives beginning with zero instead of one.

The backup and restore wizards are a breeze and the features of VBScript and MS-DOS Batch files make customizing a snap. I found the built-in Scheduled Backup features to be simple enough for my tastes as most users might. It can get a little confusing when scheduling backups for more than once a week and coordinating the time to start the backup. For example, the days are chosen with checkboxes and if you choose "twice a week", it doesn't stop you from choosing any number of days. The time is in 24-hour format (which I like), but if you choose say Sunday and Wednesday at 0001, this is really Saturday and Tuesday night to us practical folks so be aware of what you're doing and don't confuse yourself.

You can also backup files and folders separately and you have the ability to do both Incremental and Differential backups. You can set the maximum number of backup images to retain and whether to do any deletions 'before' or 'after' backups. You need to be careful with this feature and the term 'maximum' backups is bit difficult to understand. For example, I have three 1-TB drives, each with about 300GB of used space. Backing these up to a 2TB external hard drive means that I can have a maximum of two sets of images of each drive. So I had to set the deletion of old images to be 'Before' and not 'After', otherwise, I would presumably run out of disk space. Reflect is supposed to delete the oldest image first and I haven't tested that yet so I can't say if it works or not. I can say though that if you have other images on the disk for which you did not set this flag, you 'might' run into problems with backups failing due to lack of disk space.

The only real problem I had with Reflect 5 that is still unresolved is the creation of a Windows PE disk which is used for recovery. If there's an update required, which there was for my initial installation, the software downloads the update, gave me an error that 'Batch.bat' was not found and stalls. There is no way to close the Wizard after clicking 'OK' since there's no typical 'X' in the upper-right corner of the box (modal), and all the buttons for 'Back', 'Next', 'Cancel', and 'Finish' are greyed out. There is a 'View Log' button that opens up a text file but this didn't indicate any errors or how to fix them. This is one of the bugs I found. The only way out is to open Task Manager and kill the program which shows that it is still 'Running'. There's no problem creating a Linux PE but this particular PE has limitations of only restoring images to partitions of the same size. The Windows PE presumably doesn't have this limitation.

In contacting Macrium Support, they are pretty responsive so no complaint there but getting the rescue disk problem resolved is still pending (after 1-week) and perhaps a little annoying. I'm confident though that it will be fixed as it could be peculiarities with my system. You should probably have your virus protection software disabled temporarily when you do your install. You have the ability to use their Support Forum for assistance which is free but you have to be logged in as is typical under most support circumstances.

In summary, I went to Macrium from having a nightmare experience with Acronis TrueImage where it installs on your system with no way to uninstall it!!! I lambasted Acronis over this and they never responded to my support request. I also considered Norton Ghost, Active@, and others but Macrium is the only one that convinced me that my data was safe using Reflect 5.

If you're looking for a backup utility that works as expected and appreciate the idea of being able to view your images as ISO-like drives, then Reflect is the way to go. I know of others who use it and you can't go wrong! Get it!!

"Saved my hide! Worked flawlessly with Win7 recovery!"

Easy to use and helped make a hard drive image for backup and recovery purposes.

None for this software

Was able to make a hard drive image and save to an external drive. My internal failed and after replacing the failed hard drive I was able to fully recover from my backup image. No hidden secrets or obstacles. Just rebooted and started working as if it never failed. This software is worth keeping in my backup tool box.

"Fail - Did not work for me"

Why do I have to enter a Pro when I have none? Free?

I used this software over a year ago, but I keep getting a notice a new version is available, so I had to write this quick review. My PC crashed and I thought, no problem, I have a backup (from this software). Went to use the backup and it failed - would not restore at all, no matter what I tried! I am a "burn me once" kind of guy, no more chances for this one. I am always amazed by how many "new versions" there are for this program. Why is that? Bugs maybe? How much can you update a backup program?

I will try (almost) anything once, but that is all you get when it comes to backup. Too important to risk a failure. This one failed once for me, that is enough.
