Macrium Reflect Free Edition

CNET Editors' review

Backing up your computer shouldn't be a tedious task. Macrium Reflect Free Edition makes file backup incredibly easy thanks to its intuitive user interface and helpful wizards.

Installing the program did confuse us a bit, because although it's a free program, it refers to purchasing the program, and you're given a confirmation number. On top of that, the program recommends that you view the online tutorials before getting started, but you might have some trouble deciphering them unless you speak Italian. Luckily, the built-in Help menu is more than adequate and written in English. The user interface is simple but professional in appearance. Intuitive commands line the top of the window, and tabs reveal options for disk images, partitions, XML definitions, and scheduled backups. A helpful wizard guides you through the process of setting up your backup. We were able to quickly select our backup location (local hard disk, network, CD/DVD). Before proceeding, it provides you with a summary of your backup so that you can see the backup type, destination, compression type, and password protection. Here is also where you can make advanced configurations to the compression levels and file sizes.

The program did slow our computer while it worked its magic, and we were unable to browse or work with other resource-intensive programs at the same time. However, we were able to watch the backup process, and the program successfully backed up our C Drive without a hitch. If you're looking for a simple but reliable backup program, we highly recommend Macrium Reflect Free Edition to all users.

    "Amazing, fast and simple."

    January 21, 2010  |   By DaveD1948

Version: Macrium Reflect Free Edition 4.2 build 2098

    Pros

Very clean & easy to understand. A delight to use manually. Excellent at imaging and restoring all partitions - a complete success. Full version is just $39.99 a seat - even for file servers, and includes a bare metal restore that just works.

    Cons

Poor automated backup tools. Needs better backup scheduling logic, perhaps a whole plan wizard. Needs destination "free space" and backup volume rotation. Totally thoughtless automation strategy. It doesn't take much to be better than this.

    Summary

Reflect reads from and writes to many or most RAID volumes flawlessly. It makes an excellent small site imaging tool to protect users (and servers) from hardware and OS failures.

With its bootable CD, it can perform a bare-metal recovery without the need for any original installation media or the time consuming and sometimes painful basic OS re-installation required by Windows. It has always handled my RAID hardware, and has so far never dropped an image going in or out. I'm sold.

Recovery source and backup destinations include USB, CD-R, DVD+/-R, local and LAN based devices. It supports file splitting and combining with adjustable sizes for use with FAT-32 based backup media, however I have not used this feature.

It seems to be totally OS agnostic, but I'm sure that's limited to the file system types it can read and write.

"Works OK -- within its capabilities"

    January 20, 2010  |   By KNRover

Version: Macrium Reflect Free Edition 4.2 build 2098

    Pros

Easy to create image files, even for a novice.

    Cons

Cryptic when it comes to creating a bootable disk (Linux or BartPE (?) format on a Windows system). Does not support creating drive images on dual-layer DVDs with XP. Does not provide the file size before starting to write the image.

    Summary

I have never used disk imaging software, so take this review with a grain of salt. Even for someone unfamiliar with the process, Reflect makes it very easy to create an image of the hard drive. However, as noted in the cons above, it does not do two important things I think it should: (1) Tell you how many CDs/DVDs you will need to capture the image file, or at least tell you approx. what the file size will be so you know whether you have enough disks or not. (2) My computer has a dual-layer DVD writer and I have some 8.5GB dual-layer Verbatim DVD-Rs, but was disappointed to discover that Reflect supports dual-layer disks only with Vista and Win 7. As a result, I will not be using it until I get a Win 7 PC (or upgrade to Win 7 on my current PC) sometime in the future.

"Full Imaging NO Limitation Dependable Easy Xlnt Support"

    January 17, 2010  |   By P Richard Yarbrough

Version: Macrium Reflect Free Edition 4.2 build 2098

    Pros

Backup or clone [not bootable] OS while it is running (uses VSS). Backup multiple partitions and disks as one image & restore all or one file. Mount backup as if it is an external drive, browse with Windows Explorer, open, copy & paste. XLNT Support.

    Cons

NONE FOR REFLECT. Rescue CDs (Linux or BartPE) are troublesome. Used UBCD4Win with Reflect plugin and EVERYTHING works perfectly. [Details in Summary.] To build a free and reliable Rescue CD, you need access to an XP system [but it works on all OSs].

    Summary

Pros: Backup or clone [not bootable] OS while it is running (uses VSS). Backup multiple partitions and disks as one image & restore all or one file. Mount backup as if it is an external drive, browse with Windows Explorer, open, copy & paste. XLNT Support.

Cons: NONE FOR REFLECT. Rescue CDs (Linux or BartPE) are troublesome. I use UBCD4Win with Reflect plugin and EVERYTHING works perfectly. [Details in Summary.] To build a free and reliable Rescue CD, you need access to an XP system [but it works on all OS].

Summary: Used free version for one year, loved it, bought paid version.

    Works with Windows 7.

Only full partition or entire disk backup. (Cannot choose specific folders and files to backup; but you can restore individual folders and files.)

Got your system running like you want, or you are about to make some major change to it, have Reflect make an image of it. If the system crashes, the change messes things up, or the hard drive fails, you can easily recover your system to that pristine state in very little time. About 35GB of OS takes about one hour to backup and verify. To recover the system takes less than one hour. (I probably sound like a sales person for the company, but I do not work for them in any way.)

Easy to use. Good tutorials if you can't figure it out yourself. GREAT support. They actively update the product, fix bugs.

Extremely dependable. Have restored XP and Vista OS 32-bit several times, no problems.

Backup only the sectors used (Intelligent Copy) or clone (Exact Copy) partitions and disks.

The only real complaint is that a backup of a disk or partition cannot easily be restored to a smaller disk or partition. Have to use RoboRestore [free Microsoft tool] to do that. They have a tutorial on how to do that, too.

Backups can be mounted in Windows Explorer as if they were an external drive with read and execute permissions. Open files, play music, videos, etc. directly from the image (using the appropriate program installed on the OS you are using to view the image).

Need to replace only a few folders or files? Mount the backup image, navigate to the folders and files you want, Copy, then Paste them wherever you wish. I really like this feature. It makes finding a folder or file to restore much easier.

Any backup made by Reflect can be mounted on any computer that has Reflect installed on it. I mount XP backups in Vista, and Vista backups in XP, no problem.

Backups are not bootable, and cannot be run as virtual machines.

I had problems with rescue CDs. I could get them to work, but had to change BIOS settings (BartPE does not recognize RAID) or turn off external drives until Linux CD loaded Reflect, then turn them on again and Refresh Reflect's View (Verbatim external drive causes Linux to stop loading & AcomData external drive not found unless it was restarted.) I could not access my network, internet, etc.

I switched to UBCD4Win Rescue CD and that solved all my problems. It is an updated BartPE with 140 more plugins. The plugin that Reflect says is for BartPE is the plugin you need for UBCD4Win. Navigate to the same plugin folder in UBCD4Win as you would BartPE and install it. When you run UBCD4Win to make the Rescue CD, click on Plugins, scroll to Macrium Reflect, and click Configure. Very Easy.

UBCD4Win is more actively maintained than BartPE, so it stays relatively up to date. It recognizes my LAN, internet access, some RAID configurations, external drives. Website: http://www.ubcd4win.com

Early Reflect versions had problems with Vista [I have 32 bit], but they have been resolved. My Vista is the original RTM. I did a recover to original condition (destructive recovery), installed a later version of Reflect without adding any updates to Vista, and it worked perfectly. I have made many images of XP and Vista OS, and restored them several times. NEVER had a failure. EXTREMELY RELIABLE.

In XP, it is possible to do HIR (Hardware Independent Recovery), which makes upgrading to a new computer or restoring to a different hard drive a lot easier.

    Can schedule backups.

The paid version ($40) does incremental and differential backups, backs up selected files and folders, and has a much better (Microsoft's WinPE) Rescue CD.

"Easy to use, does what I need."

    January 8, 2010  |   By r_frommer

Version: Macrium Reflect Free Edition 4.2 build 2098

    Pros

It was easy to use for a full back-up. I ran it over my home network.
I have not used it for recovery yet.

    Cons

The default naming standards for the backup files are very poor. You need to use your own names, especially if you use it for more than one computer.

    Summary

Highly recommend it, especially for Vista and System 7 users. Microsoft no longer gives you a usable backup utility with the OS, except in the Ultimate version.

    "Works fine, no complaints"

    January 3, 2010  |   By sb2922

Version: Macrium Reflect Free Edition 4.2 build 2098

    Pros

I'm backing up Vista system to an ext. WD 500gb USB drive before I migrate to Win7. Image backup was fairly intuitive. My first attempt failed, but I'd left open WinExplorer accessing the external drive. I closed that window, retried, & success.

    Cons

I haven't restored yet, but so far, no complaints.

    Summary

Can't beat the price! Does what it's supposed to do, and auto-updates.
