MacScan 2.9.1 for Mac User Reviews
-
"1 star review is totally false and should be deleted"
Version: MacScan 2.6
Pros
Easy to use and install, effective in finding tracking cookies and spyware, updates its cookies and blacklist frequently, software updates provided at no cost after initial purchase.
Cons
May not be strong enough for today's often evil internet kingdom so other measure may be necessary
-
"simple, routine computer scan program"
Version: MacScan 2.7
Pros
Finds tracking cookies, extended trial period, periodic updates available for free, simple and uncomplicated.
Cons
None, though perhaps it's not quite worth $30 for what it does.
Summary
I've used MacScan for a number of months on my Mac Mini and I am satisfied with it. Each time it runs, it finds tracking cookies and allows me to eliminate them. It has yet to find anything else on my computer, though it apparently scans for many types of malware. So I guess I should be thankful I have a clean Mac! It has a 30-day trial but i used it for several months before I voluntarily purchased it. The fact that it consistently identified tracking cookies and scanned for everything else and includes updates (though you have to manually update it) and they did not force me to purchase it after 30 days (my "trial" lasted several months) convinced me it was worth purchasing. It seems like an honest, well-intended malware scan product for the Mac. I do not know of many such programs so I was pleased to discover this and happy to purchase it.

I have installed and used MacScan on my entire harddisk. The program is very easy to use and fairly quick. Wheter it really finds any spyware or not, I do not know, since it did not find any Spyware on my computer. In my opinion MacScan is worth a try if you think that you might have Spyware.

"Didn't find my spyware"
Version: MacScan 2.2
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've been the recent victim of online fraud. The only thing I can think of that would explain it would be there's some spyware somewhere on my system. (even though I hear it doesn't exist for the mac, maybe it finally does) I downloaded this app and it didn't find anything. So basically...it's useless. -
"Seems ok."
Version: MacScan 2.2
Summary

I have not experienced any problems. I am not an expert, but this seems to be at worst harmless, and at best a help in protecting my Macs. It seems to be just a an application that searches for malicious software. How often we could be confronted by such spyware is not clear to me, but speaking for myself one attack is too much. I have read brief descriptions in respected Mac books describing MacScan and describing it as an option along with Little Snitch in providing security. For example, Ted Landau in "Mac OS X Helpline" (Tiger Edition) book he (founder of MacFixIt) gives MacScan a brief description of how it works. I don't think Ted Landau would have a software program in any of his books as an option he thought was "snake oil".
Really necessary at this time is debateable, but "snake oil" seems to be a bit of hyperbole -
"Snake Oil"
Version: MacScan 2.2
Summary

People, stay away from this application , it is the Snake Oil and you need it as much as you need a finger in the eye. When someone charges $25 for somethig you DON'T NEED you should be wary! it is QUITE possible that the only spyware on your machine would be this application after you install it. And, if you do pay for it, you probably deserve it, too.
