"Stellar Application..."

March 15, 2005  |  By rwebber6828

 |  Version: MacJournal 3.0.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Dan's MacJournal is perfect for many of my tasks, and it's a stellar piece of programming, so I bought it the minute he released it as a commercial program. But I hate the download/upgrade process. I'm forced to use a download manager on my network, and it's impossible to use with Mariner's site. Please give me a straight html download link and lose the registration screen.

"Beta versions"

August 12, 2008  |  By aprillovesmacs--2008

 |  Version: MacJournal 5.1b5

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
these 15 day expiry times are a pain in the a... When I first got the Beta the one thing I didn't expect, was it to quit after 15 days. The last two have expired on me and the Beta numbers haven't even changed, it just means you have to keep going back to Mariner's web site and enter your details yet again to get yet another beta. And if you don't want to do that, there's no obvious way you can downgrade, except as one versiontracker guy has done, write directly to the developer. I work a 14 hour day as it is and I kind of resent having my time wasted. Why not just allow customers to downgrade easily by having a link on the site, or alternatively wipe the self-destruct code from the app! Well I've got three days to go before this one expires and I've already decided not to spend any more time on it - this time when it quits it can stay quit.

"Buggy"

February 02, 2008  |  By Trevor Harley

 |  Version: MacJournal 5.0.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have been using MacJournal for three years now, and I love it. I use it primarily as - well, a journal, an electronic diary, but also for keeping track of ideas, notes, plans, and goals. It's a wonderful program; more than that, it's become an essential part of my life. I'm sure I don't use its full power, either - I've never used "Discover wiki links", for example, or audio recording.

However, am I alone in discovering version 5.0 to be exceptionally buggy? It crashes all the time. Its behaviour is unpredictable. Some features (e.g. the numbering of lists) just don't work as they should. Support is now patchy; they answer some emails and comment on some bugs, but not all, and it used to be all, by return.

My advice, if you have version 4, wait for version 5 to settle down. I wish I hadn't spent money on this upgrade.

"MacJournal - Very flexible and multiple uses"

January 24, 2008  |  By jrnyoflife

 |  Version: MacJournal 5.0.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have been using the trial version of MacJournal 5 for about a week now and already it is my favorite Mac program. It is very flexible, allowing more than one journal.
I use it for actual journaling -- i.e. writing about how the day went, etc...

AND

I use it to log things, like when I sent a rebate in, a call to technical support, what I did during the day, doctor appointments, and anything else important.
MacJournal allowws entries to have keywords making them easy to categorize and find.

I volunteer for a few organizations, and MacJournal is going to be nice for taking notes of meetings and having a record of what was said during the board meeting.

For students, MacJournal could be used to take notes for a class.

Entries can also have audio and video stored in them. It's a neat feature that I would use, but unfortunately it isn't working for me. The developer is very active in trying to help me fix the problem.

All in all, MacJournal is an excellent and flexible program that I highly recommend.

"Lost work, Typing that does not get saved"

January 23, 2008  |  By juniper31

 |  Version: MacJournal 5.0.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I downloaded this other day and upgraded my journals from the past. (i haven't tried using this program for a while but thought i would get back into it). Two days in a row i have had work literally disappear. After yesterdays experience i was saving constantly as i went. somehow that didn't matter today. When i was finished all the text i had been writing was gone. Even though every time i saved the red close button in the left corner of the window indicated that i could close the application and not have to save it since i had just done it. But even with that somehow it reverted back to a previous hour and all of my writing has been lost. Two days in a row the same thing. To day i was being careful with making sure i saved every ten minutes and still that was not good enough. I haven't been this frustrated with an application in a long time. Everything no a days has the ability to back up and find what you just lost but not this version of this application.

Totally pathetic.

Summary

Definitely a great application, makes managing multiple blogs a lot easier. I especially like the full-screen mode; for those of us who need to suspend our ADD-ridden minds to write, it's a godsend. My only complaint is that it doesn't handle line breaks in Blogspot posts properly (I had to put them in manually on the site) but that'll probably be fixed eventually.

"Wish it had palm syncing..."

June 01, 2006  |  By cocoaNut--2008

 |  Version: MacJournal 4.0.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
It's great but it would be infinitely more useful to me if it could sync with the memo database in my Palm TX. It's been mentioned that it will sync with .Mac soon but I'm not interested in that.

"One feature away from perfect ...."

April 26, 2006  |  By durdles--2008

 |  Version: MacJournal 4.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Great product, BUT.... Any journal should go anywhere with you. In the old days you threw your notebook in your bag and took it everywhere. The modern-day equivalent of that would be to have my MacJournal files available on any machine I own. And that requires automatic (.mac) syncing. I have become so dependent on syncing and the ability to switch machines at whim that I will often pass up a better product for one that will sync and be available on my desktop, my laptop, even the kids' machine where I keep a user for myself. As of now, I have to be careful to IMMEDIATELY backup my MacJournal files from one machine to another lest I erase some of work by later backing up in the wrong direction. As a result I use MacJournal less than I might.

"Love this product"

Just for the record you don't need to put in your email or name, just click on the download. The developer has done a great job with this program and has been constantly improving. Applescript support is nice. Now can someone write me an applescript to send files or text to macjournal via quicksilver. Cheers.

  • Fixed the undo state after creating a journal. NSUndoManager isn't very helpful for anything really.
  • Fixed a freeze-up that can occur when you cancel the Blogger panel while it was sending an entry or getting the list of blog IDs from the server.
  • If there is a permissions problem saving the registration info MacJournal will prompt you for an administrator password to correct the issue.
  • Tossing your data in the Trash and restarting MacJournal will now create new data instead of using the data in the Trash.
  • Fixed problem where the text would be scrolled back to the previous position if that position was at the very end of the text.
