"MacGPS Pro"
Version: MacGPS Pro 5.0.0
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've been buying major upgrades to MacGPS Pro since v2.8.x.... and always glad to receive the minor upgrades by email too.
I use MacGPS Pro with a GarminLegend for logging volunteer Search And Rescue (SAR) for land-search training and deployment.
In combination with a PowerBook and Garmin Legend, MacGPS PRO is even great fun to take on road-trips just for vacation.
Recently, I've been combining MacGPS Pro capability to calibrate images from Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) for great 3-D maps.
MacGPS Pro is a great practical extension to any interest related to geographic information.
One other thing... I've called L.James a few times, and he seems very interested in developing MacGPS Pro so it meets the expectations of those who purchase it.

"Try this--It worked for my Bluetooth receiver"
Version: MacGPS Pro 4.0.6
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
At first, I had trouble with my Bluetooth GPS receiver working with MacGPS Pro and other Mac software. Then I started doing some research and realized that any Bluetooth receiver - or any Bluetooth device for that matter - needs setup in Apple's OS X operating system before it will work. Apple's setup procedure is somewhat tedious, but when I followed the steps, the software worked like a champ. I noticed that I must not be the only one that had trouble as James Associates now has the detailed Apple/Bluetooth setup procedure in the FAQ section on their web site. Here's the quote:
"To use a Bluetooth receiver with MacGPS Pro, you must first set up the Bluetooth receiver to be recognized by the Mac OS X operating system. Follow these steps:
1. Turn on the Bluetooth receiver near the Mac and let it acquire a signal from the GPS satellites.
2. Open the System Preferences Application
3. In the Hardware Section, click on "Bluetooth"
4. Select the "Devices" tab.
5. Click "Set Up New Device".
6. The Introduction page for the Bluetooth Setup Assistant is displayed. Click "Continue".
7. The "Select Device Type" page appears. Select "Other Device" and click "Continue".
8. Select the proper Bluetooth GPS device and click "Continue".
9. The Setup Assistant will ask you for a "Passkey". Look in the documentation which came with your Bluetooth GPS receiver. It should list the proper Passkey. Enter it and click "Continue".
10. The "Congratulations" page will come up. Click "Quit".
11. Open Apple's "Bluetooth Serial Utility" application in the Utilities folder.
12. The "Bluetooth Serial Ports" page will be displayed. Click "New...".
13. Enter the name of your Bluetooth GPS receiver. There are no spaces allowed in the name you use.
14. Select "Outgoing".
15. Click on "Select Device...".
16. The "Select Bluetooth Service" page is displayed. Click on the name of the Bluetooth GPS device and then Click on "Serial Port". Then, click "Select".
17. Under the "Port Type" pull down menu, select "RS-232". Click "OK".
18. Quit Bluetooth Serial Utility.
19. Open the MacGPS Pro application.
20. Open the Preferences Dialog Box.
21. In the right column where you can select the GPS Receiver type, select "Other".
22. In the left column where you can select "GPS receiver connected to:", select the name you entered in step 13 above. You will see "Bluetooth-PDA-Sync" and "Bluetooth-Modem" also listed. Do NOT select either of these choices.
23. Click "OK".
24. Open the "Mapping Choices..." Dialog box from the File menu. Choose the datum which is used by your Bluetooth GPS receiver (probably WGS 84). Click "OK".
25. Choose "Display Current GPS Readings" from the Real-Time menu. You should see the GPS data successfully displayed. "
Good luck with this OS X set-up. I really enjoy using MacGPS Pro with my lap top. My wife appreciates the fact that I no longer have wires strung out all over the place! -
"Wonderful Stuff!"
Version: MacGPS Pro 4.0.4

This is the slickest GPS program I have ever used - it does what it says it does and does it VERY e=well. Completly flawless upload/download with my Garmin eTrex Vista. Highly Recommended! Only nit is $40.00 is a bit steep for this vertical market shareware - I think $25.00 would be more reasonable but what the heck it is the only game in town :-)
