"Audio Units Support!"
Version: MOTU Digital Performer 4.1
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Digital performer now supports audio unit plugins. it seems more stable then 4.01, but crashes with some free plugins like mda, it doesn't allow to use waves in audio units format, crashes using B4...... doesn't recognize some plugins converted using FXpansion VST2AU, argh! MOTU implemented a lot of very useful new functions, but i'll give dp 5 stars when i will be able to work with it. -

much more stable. thanks motu! make sure you all read the pdf that comes with it about the buffer settings. i am able to actually run this on my ibook 500mhz now where as i would get processor warnings every 30 seconds in 4.01. -

"This update still does not resolve some issues."
Version: MOTU Digital Performer 4.0.1
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I like DP4 for OSX - compact, full of features yet remains more musician-friendly than Cubase SX or Logic 6. I've been using Cubase on OS9 and frankly Cubase SX was so bloated and buggy I switched to DP4.
DP's 'take' system is excellent for live recording with musicians - unfortunately, while it works for raw audio recordings, it does not work for MIDI sources, even though it is supposed to - aargh!
This version still crashes when an effect preset is selected from the effect's menu while playing audio.
Loop editing is unfinished - for example, in the sample editor, one can't set/drag loop markers easily and there's no way of removing the loop markers without jumping through frustrating hoops; the same goes for the sequencer's looping system.
Overall, almost there... I'd recommend anyone considering DP4 to wait until they sort these issues out as there's nothing more frustrating as inconsistent functionality; it is a shame - I like DP4, but it's not ready to be released in my view - then again, neither were Cubase SX or Logic 6 :o) -
"Oh, they forgot to mention..."

...that they fixed a *major* problem with DP 4.0, which was that it didn't work with CoreAudio-compliant (no custom driver needed) USB audio interfaces. They *finally* fixed it. Don't understand why they are so coy about saying so, but I'm glad to fix their oversight. I'm giving it 4 stars because it is still the most elegant and streamlined and easily *functional* GUI for a digitial audio/MIDI workstation that I know of, and I've had to deal with all of them. When they *finally* add AU support, DP will be *very* hard to compete with, working, as it does, with ReWire, any and all audio/MIDI hardware...and still 100% dongle-free! -
"still working in os 9"

I still can't work with DP in OSX: no third-part plugins (audio units support? where are u?), no virtual instuments supported yet, bugs (i.e. u can't change the crossing point in the crossfade window), less function than 3.11 (i.e. no orizzontal zoom with mouse on the locator).... and i've tested it for 10 minutes. 30 mb of updates to resolve tons of bugs the first release had was not enough. c'mon, MOTU! i don't wanna buy Logic Audio! -
"Much more stable thus far.."
Version: MOTU Digital Performer 4.0.1
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This update has seemed (thus far) to make the program stable enough to NOT crash every time it's used. DP 4.0 would fairly consistently give the "You must restart your computer by holding down the reset button" message of death any time that the application would tap into the second processor of my Dual 1GHz G4 tower. This, for obvious reasons, was endlessly frustrating and actually made a loyal MOTU user start to veer towards Logic, which is now on its third OSX-complient version.
Again, however, (as you can see from an earlier review I wrote) I am growing increasinglyt impatient for the update that will allow me to A) use Digidesign hardware with DP, and B) utilize Audio Units plug-ins. MOTU advertised that the first update for DP4 would integrate this capability, and quite frankly, the fact that this was not added in this version increases my already augmenting skepicism of MOTU in the software department. I think that they are waiting for the realease of their universal sampler, MachFive, in order to release this update, but if you are reading this, MOTU, just know this: every day that I can't use DP due to the slow follow-through of this AU & Digidesign update, I grow more and more comfortable using Logic instead. And this is coming from a LOYAL, LOYAL, MOTU user.
