Lotus Symphony is IBM's attempt to thrust its free desktop productivity suite into the ring with OpenOffice, Sun StarOffice, and ThinkFree. Despite similarities in word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation functions, Lotus Symphony isn't nearly as seasoned. For example, it can read files from Microsoft Office and make PDF files, but it won't open JPEG and other image files. You can drag or insert these images directly into open documents and presentations--with an up to 30-second delay. You'd be wise to save your work in Microsoft's DOC, PPT, and XLS formats if you want to send it to other users. On the plus side, Lotus Symphony is certainly worth a try. It's more attractive (in our view) than OpenOffice and Google Docs, with intuitive menus and icons to boot. We just hope IBM tightens its game in subsequent rounds.

"Heavy on the system"

March 15, 2009  |  By richteral

 |  Version: Lotus Symphony 1 beta

Pros

It carries a good brand; it has the facile look of an online application; it is free.

Cons

Tough to download; heavy on resources; possibly intrusive.

Summary

I tried Symphone perhaps a couple of years ago, but it did not last with me more than a couple of days. Just checking if it has improved so as to be actually useable, I find it has not. My laptop has not become any younger in the meantime, either, and what was testing for it then is even more so now. Perhaps a brand-new piece of hardware would handle it better, but that is not for me to find out. Even when renewing my equipment, I'll prefer OpenOffice to Symphony.

"Cannot Install"

February 13, 2009  |  By erie910

 |  Version: Lotus Symphony 1 beta

Pros

It's free. but I cannot tell how good it is, since it won't install.

Cons

When I try to install, it unpacks and a window opens which gives msiexec options. When I click OK, the only option, the installation terminates.

Summary

I really would like to try the product, but IBM has made installation difficult, if not impossible.

"About this program. Lotus Symphony"

December 20, 2008  |  By digish777

 |  Version: Lotus Symphony 1 beta

Pros

It is good. Let me start with that. I am talking about version 1.2 (http://symphony.lotus.com). I have bought the Home Office from Microsoft. Saw the banner on the top of the software non-commercial use, and thought , why not search for new.

Cons

Un sure, if the program will remain free for all time. I mean in the future,

Summary

It is good. Let me start with that. I am talking about version 1.2 which is there in the site. I have bought the Home Office from Microsoft. Saw the banner on the top of the software non-commercial use, and thought , why not search for new. This is the new one.

I have installed in the Vista Business. It looks awsome. Required reinstallation for the beast to get inside. Will make you feel slow in the beginning. Once you see the interphase, you will fall in love with it. Not big number of tabs. You will see all the promising things in same page. I love Microsoft Office. But, the way the placed the banner on the top.

I used the Lotus Symphony. Well to my experiance, It is one of the best alternative. Open Office, is a crap and it will nver ever replace the Micrisoft office. Simple reason, Sun is making it. i have been watching the program for years. They are not hardworking for the thing. Only issue now to be seen with this program is, weather they will pull the thing off from the market like star office one day.

"Good enough for the majority."

May 21, 2008

 |  Version: Lotus Symphony 1 beta

Pros

Although not as comprehensive as the other suites, this can be extended with other programs or plugins, because it's based on Java-Eclipse, just like the newest version of Lotus Notes/Domino.

Cons

Runs slow on old computers.

"It's not bad, but....."

May 02, 2008  |  By ricaneur

 |  Version: Lotus Symphony 1 beta

Pros

It has a clean, uncluttered workspace, and on my system, it's a little slow, but not annoyingly so. The spreadsheet program (which is the reason I downloaded the software) has most of the formatting features available immediately, which I find helpful while learning the program. I've never been much of a fan of programs that think they can do it all, but it is nice to have the built-in browser, especially for accessing the support forums. Overall, my experience of Lotus Symphony (so far) has not been nearly as negative as some of the other reviews.

Cons

As I mentioned above, I downloaded the software for the spreadsheet part of the program, and I was disappointed to find that many of the features I like from Lotus 1-2-3 are not to be found (I regularly use Lotus, Excel and Quattro Pro, and each program has areas in which they are superior to the others). I think that adding more 1-2-3 features would make a vast improvement. As well, the executable file is huge, and it takes quite some time to download and run the set up (at least, it did on my modest machine), so if you are going to try it, have something else to do while you are waiting.

"Very disappointed."

November 06, 2007

 |  Version: Lotus Symphony 1 beta

Pros

The interface has a very "soft" effect on eyes.

Cons

It takes ages to boot up on my P4, only to inform that an error has occured. Moreover it sucks up a lot of RAM, almost about 70MB.

I've uninstalled it and have reverted to Open Office.

"Better than I was expecting after reading other reviews."

October 03, 2007  |  By hugh_koehler

 |  Version: Lotus Symphony 1 beta

Pros

I haven't tried out the whole thing yet and my spread sheet expererience is a big zero. I did check out the word processor and find it a very good one. The download just for that alone is worth it. I installed it on a 2 year old laptop which I upgraded the memory and installed Windows Vista on. It works great so far.

Cons

Biggest problem for me was finding the download. A link to the page would have been nice. Only way I found to have a workable file on the computer was to select the http download as the IBM download manager left me with no file in the folder it was downloading to. After unpacking clicking on the setup file started the instal with no problems.

"This will cost money some day ? :( Break out the defragger"

September 24, 2007  |  By cybergaar

 |  Version: Lotus Symphony 1 beta

Pros

Interface looks nice. Save to PDF.

Cons

Requires a minimum 1GB RAM. Read min requirements. Software conflicts with some optical devices (camera, mouse) must uninstall device for software to work. Can you say FRAGMENTATION? Installation slings files into frag hell. Resource Hog - slow - memory leaks . . . but this is BETA and Free.

IBM seems to be attempting to reproduce something like Open Office Suite, which is FREE and Works. Symphony is too sluggish to be productive at this time. Hopefully I can get this thing off my PC.
