"Now is deprecated"

October 12, 2015  |  By James Denison

2015-10-12 06:36:29  |  By James Denison

 |  Version: Linux Mint 10.0

Pros

Great in it's day.

Cons

Version 10 is now deprecated. The repository for it is no longer available. The current version as of date is 17.2 and an excellent desktop solution and replacement for Windows XP. I've used it as my main system since 2014, abandoning XP before it's support expired for Linux Mint after finding out how easy it was, and came with Firefox and Thunderbird too.

Summary

Linux Mint 10 is dead, but the later versions are among the best transition systems for former windows users. It's also been rated #1 at Distrowatch dot com, a clearing house for all linux versions, for almost two years running now. The closest to it now is Debian and Unbuntu. If you want to leave windows, or have an operating system for an older computer that won't run windows 8 or above, then Linux Mint is what you want.

"Refreshing experience."

February 07, 2015  |  By rfnorman

 |  Version: Linux Mint 10.0

Pros

Easy to install. If you can set your bios to boot from a CD or USB drive, you van install Mint. Works with most hardware. Everything on my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge works automatically. The interface, Cinnamon, is intuitive to anyone who has used windows before. Customizing the look and feel of the desktop and panel is also quite simple. The included office software can create and handle microsoft office format documents as well as PDF's and more. The software center includes thousands of additional applications you can download for free to handle your pictures, play some games or do just about anything else you would like.

Cons

My usb bluetooth adapter connects to remote speaker, but will not send the signal to the speaker. Bluetooth is one area where linux support is lacking still. Most commercial software is not ported to work with linux. Although I was able to download SuperTuxKart from the software center, I am not able to play my favorite game on Mint. :-(

Summary

Mint is a well polished and very functional operating system that will do nearly anything I ask of it. It is very stable on my Lenovo laptop and is just a joy to use. And, I love that it does not ask me constantly "do you really want to do that" when I click on a button. Thank you to the Mint developers for all the hard work and for a great product.

"v10.0 was good, but v14 is a true OS contender"

May 29, 2013

2013-05-29 07:30:38

 |  Version: Linux Mint 10.0

Pros

MATE desktop interface is clean, classic and a refreshing world away from the "app" and "tiles" world most OSes including Windows and the latest Ubuntu Desktop versions are moving to. It includes just about every single piece of software needed for daily computing "out of the box". Very little needs to be added except for any specialty applications you may use.

Cons

Hey It's Linux and not Windows, so expect a little more DIY. It won't run Windows applications directly. Installing WINE provides an avenue for running certain applications, but it's hit or miss at best. However, installing Oracle VM VirtualBox will solve the compatibility conundrum for most. You can install and run a full version of Windows (or any other OS) in a virtual machine that adeptly handles its task.

Summary

Linux Mint has what it takes to become a serious OS contender. While the standard Ubuntu distributions continue to stray toward the more popular trends of the day, Mint keeps it fresh by adding new features but still keeping maximum usability. If I were a major OS software company, I'd keep an eye on this little bugger. Those of us who are becoming tired of what the big guys offering up these days might just decide a refreshing Mint is just what is needed.

"Good to Learn an OS"

November 29, 2011  |  By rgor

2011-11-29 17:22:33  |  By rgor

 |  Version: Linux Mint 10.0

Pros

Fast, no nonsense easy to use. A great way to learn Linux and become an expert. You can't go wrong and once you learn what you need, it will make you look like an expert.

Cons

1. ATI drivers were difficult to install
2. Some websites are not compatible with linux versions of firefox
3. Flash is an issue in terms of its behavior on chrome
4. If you run into trouble, you are at the mercy of the community.

Summary

Great alternative OS, works great and free.
Easy to Install
You can learn w/o messing up windows
Be prepared to learn and you will get better, if you want things to work and are not into computers then you should avoid linux based os especially if you have windows based applications for work such as Kareo.

"This is the best all-around distro I have ever used."

May 25, 2010  |  By rh5018

2010-05-25 12:05:34  |  By rh5018

 |  Version: Linux Mint 9.0

Pros

Mint is very user-friendly, and with over 30,000 packages, has thousands more than most distros. It has great hardware support-the wireless JUST WORKED. That has always been a big problem with Linux on laptops, but not anymore. It has a great look.

Cons

No real easy way to install a ATI graphics driver, and as far as I know-no easy way to use an external display when connected using S-video port. I'm not, by any measure, a Linux expert, so maybe I'm just too novice to figure the display issue out.

Summary

If you are an advanced Linux user- you will certainly like Mint. If you are a semi-advanced user- you will love it. If you have never used Linux ever before- you will be amazed, and probably converted. It requires almost NO knowledge of command-line interface, and a Windows or Mac user can easily jump right in and feel right at home. Actually- at a much better home. I am a Linux user for life because of Mint, and as soon as Netflix supports Linux, I'm done with Windows forever.Start using Linux and learn Chinese, or you will be left behind with Microsomethin'.
