"The USB-serial adapter adds the serial port..."

March 17, 2005  |  By Gimz

 |  Version: Link2GPS 1.8.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.

Of course most Macs don't have a serial port, but yet most GPS' only come with a serial port (and even if they also have an USB port you cannot use it because Garmin doesn't make an USB driver).

That's what an USB-serial adapter is for. You plug it into an USB port and plug the serial cable from your GPS into the adapter. The USB-serial adapters driver makes sure the OS thinks it has a serial port.

There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there are stupid reviews. rocteur_dotmac if you don't understand it you should ask before judging!

BTW, the GPSMAP276C now works like a charm. :-)

Don't know what weaselboy's problem is but Link2GPS connects just fine to both my Garmin eTrex Legend and Street Pilot III.

"Sorry...it isn't a low battery issue."

Put brand new batteries in, giving a 100% reading. This software simply will not communicate between a Street Pilot III and the Keyspan 19HS. This is a Link2 GPS issue. Again: The Garmin can communicate perfectly with the freeware application GPS Connect. The Streetpilot is running the latest version of software 2.80. At this juncture, I wouldn't recommend this software for use with the StreetPilot III...hence the low rating.

I just connected this up to my Garmin 60C and was able to send and receive waypoint quiclky and easily. Now it just needs the ability to support the waypoint notes that the 60C supports for geocaching.

"Yah, it rocks."

Summary

I alredy love this product more than I used to love GPSy under OS9, and it's only just begun. A few rough edges, but very stable and gets the job done. I used to have to go to the PC to do odd things like modify the saved tracks on my eMap, but no more. I typed up 2 new waypoints in XML and dropped the file onto Link2GPS. Wham. They were uploaded perfectly.

"Excellent. If you have a Garmin and OS X you need..."

Summary

...this.
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
FINALLY support for OS X and my Garmin eTrex Legend.
I had previously purchased a Keyspan USB twin serial adapter,
as well as another brand. The Keyspan didn't work via
VPC 6, lose$2k, and the Garmin software, but the other
USB device did. However, VPC runs too slowly on my G3
to make the connection and my 800mhz G4 was only
hit-and-miss. Just check alt.satellite.gps for numerous
similar experiences.
Link2GPS worked perfectly with my Keyspan, on my G3,
and it is faster too. At $8 it is a steal. Had it been available
via the typical shareware "send what you think it's worth"
I would have sent $15 or $20. I can't wait to get my
registration to try HikeTech's mapping app, also $8.
