Version: LimeWire Beta 5.0.11
"Needs Work, Stick with Classic for Now."
Pros: Easy to use, and some downloads connect more often than with version 4. Social networking features are nice for those who enjoy that sort of thing (not really my thing though).
Cons: An impressive number of glitches, crashes frequently, dumbed down interface, disappearance of features and many preferences options.
Summary: New version, does not mean better. While there are some improvements, they do not outweigh the new program's detriments.
The biggest problem are the frequent crashes. You can expect that if you leave the program running for a several hours if will crashed. And while less frequent it often crashes shortly after opening.
Despite claims to the contrary, spam and junk search results are still around. Fortunately, the spam results are significantly reduced. You are not getting fifty to several hundred a search anymore. And the "Mark as Spam" option is much more satisfying than "Mark as Junk" option in version 4.
As someone who tends to queue half a dozen searches upon booting the program, the search interface has devolved significantly. Only three search tabs are visible at a time, for the rest you have to flip through a "More" pull down menu. Searches are breif and spend such a significantly shorter time searching that if you are a person who spends a lot of time search, you can expect to be well acquainted with the "Find More Results" function. You will be clicking it frequently, to say the least.
My advice, wait for future updates. LimeWire 5 for OS X is much in need of repair, refinement, and improvement. For now it is best to stick with version 4.
Updated on Feb 8, 2009P.S. For those of you who make frequent use of torrents, while they may work in Version 5, it is best to stick with a separate client like uTorrent. You are more likely to get reliable connections and faster speeds elsewhere.
