"Standard Hack and Slash MUD. Nothing extraordinary."

    December 26, 2010  |   By squeamo

    Version: Legends of Terris 0.423

    Pros

The pros are whoever wrote the original game content. If you enjoy reading (MUD) you will get a sense of adventure from the game. It's very old-school, plain jane, which I consider a pro. Descriptions and general flavor are good.

    Cons

Small playerbase (generally 3-7 players on nowadays, just checked and there were 3)

Very rude and arrogant staff ("Immortals", even in customer service issues they roleplay a God and if you behave outside their expectations you are disciplined)

    Summary

First, I'm an ex-player. I played Terris when it was on AOL and left shortly after they began charging. I've gone back a couple days out of each year for nostalgia. I'm not a journalist so forgive me if the writing isn't professional. I've taken some time to vomit a lot of my thoughts about a game to which I was once very devoted. I don't post a lot on forums, which is why you'll probably only see this review from me here.

Legends of Terris (Formerly TerrisMUD) is a sad-but-true example of potential wasted and humans exploited. The game began in the early 90's I assume with pure intentions. Once the game reached around 500-600 players on at a time, an amazing role-play environment and wonderful place to be, the staff/creators decided to cash in. They started charging $15/month to play and of course the player base dwindled. Anyone now who is saying that on average peak you'll see 20-30 players is misinformed or being very generous. Now you will never find more than 10 players on. I've revisited it a few times this year (2010) in peak UK and US hours and the most players I've seen on is 7 at a time, most of whom were not registered. The freeplay/unregistered option lets you get to level 35 and you can't use many of the features involved in playing with others. You grind to 35 by yourself and that's it. You can RP with the 3-7 people on but other than that the game is pointless after that.

Anyone who posts in favor of this game is obviously staff there doing their job ($), or they are sadly a player who is trying to rebuild the once rich atmosphere which is gone, forever, no matter how many nice posts they make. People are still hanging on and try to get others involved, but of course very few will pay $15/month for this.

Immortals / Staff. Search about Terris. Yes, there's a reason you see so many posts talking about the staff as being arrogant, rude and narcissistic - because they are. Even with a game issue if you go to them you have to bow, be respectful, and treat them like Gods (yes, even in a customer service exchange, they are to be treated as Gods) if they'll even acknowledge you. They look for even the slightest infraction of any game rule as an opportunity to "smite" players or use some other "divine intervention" abilities. Often the game seems like it was created for the staff (many of whom are severe alcoholics, not a joke) and not the players.

The game is very challenging, and you have to work hard to master it (basically, write on scratch paper the directions of each room you go through, and map out the whole game). The challenges make it fun, but Gods look at the questing process as another thing they can control and discipline people for. If you share ANY information about questions, locations, etc. you will be disciplined. And, again, do a search. If you look around the internet at postings sharing/asking for quest help, the posts have been deleted, as the staff have gone to great lengths to keep the game challenging. So, often new players turn away frustrated.

The question they ask themselves - Why would I pay $15/month to be berated by maladjusted staff members, play with 2-3 other players who are 100 levels ahead of me, and spend most of my time taking notes like I'm in Algebra class?

It has some wonderful writing in it. But, now it's an empty shell they've left set up on the internet to exploit the last few addicts remaining for some extra cash each month. They say they've added new features, updates, etc. But go to the game, anything added is simply changing the words on the screen, fixing a couple descriptions, probably took less than an hour of coding, and was done just to make it look like they still care about the players who are left paying the $15/month.

The staff/creators of Terris are too narcissistic to admit fault and reduce the monthly payment, and of course they're too greedy. Yes, there are some nice players and even a few nice staff. But for the most part, this game is basically some of the greatest fantasy writing in MUD history, used as toilet paper by a few greedy people who were lucky enough (cha-ching) to know Paul Barnett and Doug Goldner back in the 90's.

Writing is immersive and beautiful. The world itself could still to this day draw hundreds of players, even if it charged around $5/month. But, when your staff has a Hitler complex don't expect them to do anything in favor of players. Terris has never cared about its players and never will. Go there and read a few pages, use your imagination, enjoy the atmosphere, and then run like mad before you waste any money or more of your precious time on Earth.

If it sounds like I'm bitter, I guess it's because I am. Anytime Terris is brought into the conversation I get that way. It was a fun and wonderful experience, and there are memories I will always cherish. But I'd be talking the same way if one of the games I play now did the same thing.

    "Great Game"

    May 5, 2010  |   By ppierce77

    Version: Legends of Terris 0.423

    Pros

Great rp enviroment, great guild, temple, household structures, gain city, guild, and temple ranks. RP is encouranged and rewarded. Old school gaming kept alive and updated monthly.

    Cons

None - the price they mention is an option you can also play for free

    Summary

If you enjoy roleplaying this is the game for you. If you want to see what rp is about, this is the game for you. This game is a text based semi-graphic MUD, you should learn what that is before you coming here thinking it is a typical mmorpg. Thousands of quests, monsters, and huge game enviroment to explore. This is how it all began, some come on over and give it a try. Send Crucifix a TELL when you start the game, I will help guide you through the basic commands that will set in motion a rp experience like none you have ever known.

"Legends of Terris is SUPPOSED to be text based"

    August 8, 2009  |   By sylvangale

    Version: Legends of Terris 0.423

    Pros

Legends of Terris has is a text based fantasy game that's been around for over 10 years. The graphical interface is really a front end to make it easier to do things. One really can get around just typing text.

    Cons

When you get up in age, it gets difficult to level up and on top of that it's very easy to lose all your experience earned in game play when you die. It makes the game much less fun than it used to be.

    Summary

This was my favorite of the many text based games out 10 years ago. I haven't really played any text based games in a long while. My last Terris log in was 2006! My characters are still there. At least they gain age modifiers.

    "Not worth $15/month....not worth $.01/century."

    November 15, 2006  |   By modemholdem

    Version: Legends of Terris 0.423

    Pros

I liked this game when it was free. Now it is $15/month (as much as a graphic MMORPG). The game had approximately 600+ players on at any given time when it was free. Now that they charge, you're lucky if there are 40 people on during peak hours. The only "pro" about Terris, if any, is that it USED to be a good game. The strength was the huge playerbase and roleplaying community which was very nice...they killed that.

    Cons

This game used to be amazing. Then, the creators got greedy. Now they just let it sit there on the web, raking in as much money as they can from the few addicts left. The game has not even been updated since they started charging, more than a minor change or two. The staff are rude. They don't use real customer service but instead insist on 100% always roleplaying and thus think they are actual GODS (even in customer service queries). So you have to bow and be polite or you get a smite or something. Run by greedy and socially inept British computer nerds, stay away from this game. Go spend your FIFTEEN BUCKS A MONTH on something like an actual MMORPG with graphics or alcohol.

"This is only a free trial which means it has limitations"

    October 6, 2006  |   By rpg-collecter

    Version: Legends of Terris 0.423

    Pros

    I like their game description.

    Cons

I went to their website. They are calling this game only a free trial. To me that means you eventually have to pay for it. It should not be listed as free.

    "Excelent Throught The Years"

    October 28, 2005  |   By GageEndal

    Version: Legends of Terris 0.423

    Pros

Legends of Terris expands your mind to a world that you can come to embrase just as strongly as you did with the D20 games such as Dungeons and Dragons and Dragonlance. You enter a very strongly built game that has been tried and true for the last 13 years, and will remain to be strong for the next 132 years.

    Cons

There are a few typos in the room descriptions and I would like to see a few more players to converse with. I remember back in the days when Terris would have thousands of players just lining up to join the guilds of their choice and adventure throught the night.
