"Apple Soft-where?"

October 21, 2006  |  By Wm. Cerniuk

 |  Version: LDapper X 2.0.4

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Apple supplies Directory Assistant which requires the ability to accurate define a FQDN or (FQOU if you are a microsofty) yet Apple supplies no way to efficiently retrieve such information. With LDapper X, I have been able to retrieve such information but not easily as there is no SSL support.

LDapper's interface is somewhat clunky as it stores the 'setup document' information in the preferences. If someone has more than one LDAP system to scan, this is cumbersome. Sharing a setup is also painful and is most easily done via screen shots of the LDapper preferences (gad).

Really thankful that the application is here. Just as disappointed in Apple for not providing a better one in Mac OS X which so heavily relies on LDAP. Right now LDapper is the only game in town and thankfully it is not bad; not great but not bad. But without SSL support, the larger LDAP systems (say DoD) are completely inaccessible. This is holding Macintosh back in the Army in fact.

Big thanks to Carl Bell for writing it. Would be happy to pay for 'LDapper Pro'

What's new in version 2.0.3
Bug Fixes:
  • If "Clear List" option was not set, searches would fail with a "selector not recognized" error in the console, but because the status sheet is attached to the window you could never close the window.
  • Although LDapper would select the first item in a list after performing a search, you still had to click the list to copy, mailto, etc.
  • Info text field of browser window was editable.
  • Cancelling the Options sheet didn't actually cancel.
  • Default file name when exporting was "foo".
  • Copying an entry in a browse window (from the list, not selected text) will copy the entry's DN. This can be used as a search base to find anything "below" it in the LDAP tree.
  • Option added to show "friendly attributes" in the info field. The default is off.
  • Can no longer select "n/a" item in browser window's list.
  • Can now specify the format of copied addresses, i.e., "name
    " or "address (name)".
  • Added a tooltip to the search attribute popups that displays the "other" attribute when "Other" is selected. (The popup no longer displays the attribute.)
  • Added the ability to export addresses directly to the Address Book. This requires MacOS X 10.2 or later.
  • As always, some minor cosmetic tweaks.
