"Can work on Windows 7"
Version: Kleptomania 2.6
Pros
I used to use this application 8 or 9 years ago, and it worked great. It grabbed text on screen and had 99 percent accuracy. And it still can, read on.
Cons
Unfortunately, this is probably still the same version I used 9 years ago; it appears it has not been updated, and the associated website for the application does not seem to exist. That said, I was able to get it to work on Windows 7 64-bit...
Summary
To run on Windows 7, I ran the installer in "Compatibility Mode" for 2000 (Properties of the installer exe file), and then I changed both exe files in the program files (x86) sub-directory to both run with 2000 compatibility as well. I received a few odd errors, but I was able to capture text and paste it into an application, as advertised.
Bottom line is this: If you need something for a short duration (40 days), then the demo may work for you for a while, whereas anything that is designed to work on a modern OS will cost you at least $30 - $100+. It has helped me out of a pinch, but I don't expect to leave it on my Windows 7 x64 system for long since it seems unsupported and not designed for Win7. -

"Quick solution for data transfer with some reservations"
Version: Kleptomania 2.6
Pros
Easy install in XP Pro system, Easy interface, irritating pop-ups.
Cons
Some OCR errors - (hotmail.com became hotmaii.com; gmail.com became gmaii.com). No proofing or learning OCR. No preference setting for screen fonts to assist OCR engine.
Summary
Overall satisfied with OCR accuracy. I would check or validate the data before inserting it into a database. A B+ effort overall.

"Extremely memory intense, crashes, and slows computer"
Version: Kleptomania 2.6
Pros
Short cut keys and fonts added automatically makes the front end simple and nice.
Cons
Reading 75 words generates a 235 meg clipboard file. The program crashes soon afterward though I have 2 gig mem. For some reason firefox locks up too though not associated with the item being read nor the program. Computer runs slowly afterward.
Summary
Most of these ocr programs are based on the same "engine". It does not work. Notice ratings on all similar programs. In addition, even if the program worked as claimed, the time it takes to translate the minute amount of ocr text that can be read within common memory limits its longer than it would take to type it.

"It said that it does PDF - it does not"
Version: Kleptomania 2.4
Pros
It looked like it would work....
Cons
Cryptic controls. Wouldn't do PDF files as advertised.

"Simple, powerful, uniquely effective"
Version: Kleptomania 2.4
Pros
I know no similar product, that allows me to capture text from screens where the program's author neglected to make the text copy-able.
Cons
1) It's not perfect in recognizing text (of course).
2) It's not always obvious that it failed. It might help for the failed captures (when Klepto makes up a bunch of punctuation for the letters it can't recognize) to show up in another color or something.
