"Cashed my Wallstreet"
Version: KisMAC 0.05d1
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I installed KisMAC 0.05d1 on my PowerBook G3 300 MHz (Wallstreet) with a Lucent Orinoco Gold card in OS X 10.2.6. During installation, the installer advised that I "fix" a problem with the WirelessDriver 1.0.0b5 (by Rob McKeever). I accepted the option to fix the driver and the installer then attempted to restart my computer. However, the PowerBook would freezes when the grey Apple screen appeared (immediately after the startup chime). Everytime.
I was able to startup in "safe mode" (by depressing the Shift key during startup). By this method I managed to uninstall KisMAC, but this didn't sove the starup freeze. Reinstalling the WirelessDriver returned everything to normal.
Shame on the developer for causing repeated startup freezesâ??something I've never experienced in OS X. Worse though is the lack of any documentation with the installer. You have to search the developer's web site, and the documentation there is decidedly inadequate.
A program that attempts to do what this one doesâ??with dire consequences in the event of failureâ??should be thoroughly documented. And this documentation should be in my face. -
"Works GREAT!"

I was a little upset at first, because I completely lost my AirPort card, and couldn't get it back easily. After a bit of experimenting, I got it to work again.
I would recommend better documentation in this area.
I had to keep activating, and deactivating it, then I figured out, it wouldn't restore the driver because Safari was open.
Once I closed Safari, re-launched KisMac, then quit it again, all was back to normal!

"appreciate this great App & all the constant work..."
Version: KisMAC 0.05b3
Summary
...that's done on it.

i currently use a dvi g4 pb with a orinoco card(as int. airport doesn't cut it), unfortunately the open source driver(needed to use a pmcia card w/OSX) that came out almost a year ago doesn't support sniffing. i've using kismac since it's release and must say that some of the original versions would cause occasional difficulty, it's been much improved for awhile now. since they've added the ability to have it stop the open source driver when you start kismac use of this app is alot smoother and reliable.
can't believe the effort behind this as there seem to be updates on a weekly basis sometimes more than one update in a week. i've just found out that by using a buffalo 802.11g card with airport 3.1 this card is recognized as a valid airport card(since i believe it uses the same chipset as airport extreme). i might swith over to using this kind of setup. i do hope that at some point the developer gets the info needed to add support for this kind of setup.
great work so far. -
"Alternatives"

This is different from MACstumbler or iStumbler because this is designed to do things gain access to the wep key (for security purposes of course ;-)) whereas the stumblers are just for measuring signal strength, seeing the name etc. KisMAC is a wonderful program. It can be used to do everything the stumblers can do and more (like graph signal strength, which is particularly useful for seeing if you are moving closer or further from a base station when walking or driving with a computer.) I have the stumblers, but I prefer using KisMAC so much that I rarely use the stumblers at all. I have used KisMAC to do a science project (I'm 14) and that came out quite nicely. Where am I going with this you ask? GET KISMAC NOW if you have a laptop and an airport card and a desire to test your wireless network (or be a hacker.) but first, read the documentation, or you might wind up giving yourself a series of kernel panics as I did when I started using this app ;-) -
"Works pretty well"
Version: KisMAC 0.04d

Yeah, it's still a bit rough around the edges, but overall this worked well for me. It does install its own wireless driver while it's running, which disables all your other 802.11 access, but perhaps that's necessary. What this means, of course, is that once you find a WAP, you'll have to quit out of KisMAC before being able to make use of the WAP. Also, I found the option to start scanning on launch is error-prone; it says it can't initialize the driver but once you click "Abort" it goes ahead and works anyway. But this is pretty polished for a 0.04 Alpha release. No crashes or other serious problems at all. Recommended! -
"Buggy, but works."
Version: KisMAC 0.04d
Summary

I installed kismad and selected the first driver. Ran it on my airport network and immediately my airport connectivety dropped. I've seen people state they permanently lost connectivety. I did not. I had to force quit because after selecting none for the driver (hoping/guessing it goes back to the apple one and unloads the other one when it quits). This didn't return my system so I just ran the unistaller and my airport popped right back up. Obviously the product works, but it's got a few too many bugs to make me completely satisfied with recommending it.
