    "Interesting concept, poorly executed"

by AvianWaves on August 31, 2009

Pros: - Tons of different media playing options
    - Lots of supported formats
    - Fast GUI

Cons: - QVGA on VGA devices
    - Inconsistent GUI with rest of WM OS
    - SMALL TINY on-screen buttons
    - Not customizable AT ALL
    - Covers title bar / alarms / etc.
    - Requires email address to use (I HATE forced spam)
    - No streaming support without paying

Summary: This is a really great concept. It's basically trying to be an all-in-one media player with each type of media (video, music, etc.) being a seperate module. However, I think they bit off more than they can chew. Each module is very bare bones. So even though it seems to support a lot, it's very thin on features for each thing it supports. Additionally, simple things like playing streams is only available in the pro version.

And about the "pro" version. They are trying to become their own "OS" as the pro version includes an app store with its own apps that only run under Kinomo and not WM itself.

Focus, guys! If it was just a media player and they focused on making it a good media player, it could knock the other third party players out of the water! But instead, it gets more and more new modules, but the existing modules are just... very basic and limited.

I'll revisit in a year and see if it's gotten better, but right now I don't see any compelling reason to use this over even the lacking built-in Windows Media Player. If I want games or other silly widget software, I'll download a cab from Handango. lol
