• The main feature that I can't find elsewhere like in the free Aldiko reader is the highlighting and notes feature.
• A second minor advantage is the easy access to commercial books. If you just want to read freely available classics go elsewhere.Cons
• The latest version 3.5.1.1 (as of summer 2012) is a disaster. Startup time on my Droid/Milestone deteriorated from ~20 seconds to a full 2 minutes. So long in fact that the Android OS repeatedly asks whether to force close the slow application. I'm getting Astro to be able to reverse future "downgrades".
• The notes/highlight feature crashes and completely deletes your personal data. I have read a total of 10 ebooks using Kindle for Android. With dozens to hundreds of highlights. For 4 of those books my highlights where completely wiped out. That's hours of work gone and a huge disappointment.
• The highlights synchronisation feature does not work reliably. Before the last notes crash, I synchronized with the Amazon servers. Yet after the crash, the server didn't contain the notes that I thought I had backed up. Meaning that even though the reading position was properly updated the notes and highlights were actually not copied to the server.Summary
When it comes to reading I seen no advantage of the Kindle Android app over for example the small company competitors like Aldiko. The highlight and notes feature is the ONLY thing that I cannot find there and it is a powerful feature, esp. if you want an reader for professional ebooks. Yet, despite tens of thousands of employees the Amazon Kindle reader is far from professional, got much worse in the latest version, and regularly wipes out your data and wastes your time. I went through a drawn out trouble shooting process with Amazon over the phone and the only thing that I got at the end was the useless comment that it was a known bug and that it may be (!) resolved with the next release for which they couldn't give me a date or even an estimation. I'm looking for more professional solutions elsewhere. If you need an ebook reader for work or intensive leisure use, you should too.
