    "Completely unusable"

    None. Unusable

    Cons

    1) Kies installed itself (without asking) to wrong partition, causing HAVOC in Windows (XPpro) Explorer (which kept crashing until Kies was uninstalled).
    2) Kies seems to install drivers, but Windows says "problem with device" and Kies does not recognize phone. Zero connection all round.
    3) Kies and te Samsun site seem to lack any data/helpfiles that recognize this as an issue.
    4) Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggghhhhhhhh!

    Summary

    I thought problems making mobiles and computers talk to each other were behind me when I upgraded to a Smartphone, but even the fairly dire Motorola Phone Tools software managed to communicate with the mobile and perform syncing and backups. Kies is unbelievably awful - this is 2012! It's not a Friday afternoon job, but an early-hours-of-Sunday-morning-after-a-weekend-of-non-stop-drinking job. (I'm going to try MobileGo, as suggested by Conno - fingers crossed!)
