"Good idea but it's been done already, and better."
Version: Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner
Pros
Free scanning without the need to pay for and install software. Can be used in conjunction with software already running on a computer for an extra set of results.
Cons
It's already out there, and in a more inclusive all-in-one site, http://www.virustotal.com
Only provides results for KIS scanner.Summary
http://www.virustotal uses about 50 scanners to disseminate the results of a scan. Unless I'm missing something, Kaspersky is one of those scanners used there. Good idea, but it's already been done.
The only reason I gave it two stars is because in my opinion Kaspersky is the best of all the scanners. I find this site quite useless. -

"If you like a first time dog-slow 22 MB download ...."
Version: Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner
Pros
It didn't crash or lock up my test PC.
Cons
1. This "online" scanner downloads 22 MB of signature files into your user profile using ActiveX. The download process from Kaspersky's site took 20 minutes over my cable modem connection.
2. When I need to check a system do I want to take 20 minutes to download files and then have to run a scan on top of that? It would be faster to scan the file system from a locked down PC.
3. The user profile is no less susceptible than any other file system location, which means that despite any CRC or hashing that may be used for file integrity checking, the application launch could fail or be hijacked.
4. On anything other than a clueless users' PC, any infection would have to have gotten past one AV system, so the value of this is as a zero day response or a
second opinion. This program only detects, it doesn't repair, it would be better to have a process that downloaded an ISO image that included a Linux or XP boot image to a different PC, copy that onto a flash drive or CDROM with a XP boot image. This might take 30 minutes total from a decent website, but to wouldn't have to be repeated for every PC.
5. It couldn't detect all the infected files on a CDROM I test with. These files were caught by Symantec AV using 2 month old signatures.
