After the first time running it, which is somewhat slow, it runs much faster, under a minute. I have it in my toolbar and run it when the mood hits me, once or twice a week just to see if AVAST has missed anything.

Nothing - for what it is.

This isn't meant to be your primary means of protecting your computer. I recommend it, particularly to less adept users, to use for additional peace of mind. I've been using it for years and it has found one or two items that AVAST missed as malware entered my computer in an archived (.rar .zip) form. I then ran the deep scan on AVAST which rooted out and removed the problem before it got too bad.
I've noticed the real time shields I've used will not catch malware that's contained in archived files. This is a good quick check to run after unpacking them to make sure you haven't gotten some crapware installed when you open them up. -
