Editors' Review

Protecting your computer from viruses is not something to take lightly, so we're glad to say Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal Pro does a reasonable job of keeping your PC safe. We like this application's unique features that protect Microsoft Office applications, as well as the new utilities for safeguarding archived files.

The interface divides the app's functionality into three main areas: Protection, Settings, and Support. The Protection tab offers the meat of the features, with tools for scanning drives, downloading the latest virus definitions, quarantining offenders, archiving, and generating reports. The Settings tab supplies a number of options for configuring the level of protection, scheduling events, tailoring the interface, or adjusting the program's behavior to your liking. The Support tab also gives you some nice features, including a virus encyclopedia and an option for sending the app's developers a questionable file for analysis.

Recently, Kaspersky has been slightly outperformed in catching threats and we find the price to be a bit steep. All told, though, Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal Pro's combination of tools and features make it an excellent choice for personal use.

"For The Experienced/Power User, Kaspersky Is The Best!"

September 02, 2008  |  By Arvin_C

 |  Version: Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0.0.125

Pros

- Provides Total Protection of Your System
- Best In Class Anti-Virus, P2P & Malicious Files/Trojan Scanning
- Protects System Registry and Integrity
- Completely Configurable
- Works With Minimal Resources
- Tops In Customer Support

Cons

- NOT FOR THE CASUAL USER!!
- Somewhat Complicated Install & Initial Configuration Process
- Steep Learning Curve
- Complicated Interface
- Can "Feel" Too Intrusive
- Not The Fastest at Scanning Your System
- Very Pricey

Summary

First, let's get this out of the way: Kaspersky Labs' products are not the best choices for the "casual" PC user. Having said that, if you're a "power" user and/or know your way around your rig and OS, nothing will protect your machine better than the stuff coming out of Kaspersky Labs. Simply put, Kaspersky Internet Security 7 is the best and most fully-featured security suite I have ever used!

Kaspersky IS 7 comes with a whole host of features. Like other protection suites, you get antivirus, file scanners, internet security with a pop-up blocker, a firewall, P2P security and a mail scanner with anti-spam. Sounds familiar, right? Well, there are two big differences.

The first one is a feature they call Proactive Defense. Basically, this feature helps you keep control of Registry. If you don't know, your Registry is basically your PC's database of settings, instructions and such that tell it how to operate. Your PC makes changes to the Registry every time you install new software, add hardware, change a setting to Windows, etc. However, if your not careful or not aware, many programs, both good and bad, can make changes to Registry that are undesirable. Also, malicious files like Trojans, Worms and other applications change your Registry so that they can run in the background without you even knowing it. Proactive Defense basically locks-down your Registry so that changes will only be made once you confirm them. The feature is completely configurable in terms of on/off and how secure you want it to act. But having used it, I can attest to it's incredible effectiveness. I build all my rigs by hand and like having control over the OS as much as possible. Proactive Defense provides a way to keep this control. This feature will help keep your rig free of "fluff"...extra, un-needed programs and applications that a lot of software comes with that can suck-up valuable resources. Also, should you become infected (highly un-likely considering that Kaspersky Antiviur is still the best), malicious programs will have a incredibly harder time taking control of your PC. Other protection suites offer this...Kaspersky's is just the best I've used.

The second big difference is how "small" Kaspersky is. For a suite that offers so much protection, Kaspersky doesn't hog your rig's memory or take up any processing cycles. In comparison, products from Symmantec, McAfee, etc. can bog down your system just running in the background! Kaspersky actually "throttles" itself as it works. If your using your PC during a scan, update, etc. it minimizes the ammount of resources it needs from your machine in order to keep your doing what you need to do. Whether your burning a CD, compiling video or playing Crysis, Kaspersky IS 7 will taylor itself to you. Other programs promise small "footprints", but Kaspersky really delivers!

Sounds great, right? Well, there are some issues. Like I first said, this IS NOT the best security option for the casual user. Why? The problem lies in how powerful and complete Kaspersky comes out of the box. When you first install it, you are confronted with a a myriad of settings, configuration options and warnings. To the un-initiated, this can be very confusing and downright scary! There is a lot to Kaspersky's initial set-up and it really doesn't hold your hand through it like some other suites. In fact, you have to confirm and acknowledge almost every step of the set-up. For most users, this far too much trouble to go through when all they want is to protect their PC.

Second, Kaspersky, by default, is very secure. Sounds good, right? Well, by very secure, I mean it locks down your machine so well, everyday tasks like surfing the web, opening attachments to e-mail and starting many programs will cause a very noticable warning asking whether it's okay to proceed with your intended action. Initially, Kaspersky can "feel" very intrusive on your machine. One must go into the Kaspersky interface and change a myriad of settings to get things just right. This takes time, patiance and some trial and error. Kaspersky IS 7 is a very powerful and complete product, but getting the most out of it and utilizing all it's features requires a steep learning curve. Fortunately, the program doccumentation and manuals are excellent and Kaspersky Labs customer support is incredible!

So, to sum it all up, it comes down to this: Kaspersky Internet Security 7 is the best security suite you can buy. And while all this power requires significant time in setting it up and configuring it to your tastes, you can rest easy in knowing you have the best tools at your disposal. In the end, how much effort is it worth to you to keep your PC and data this safe and secure?

"Perfect anti-virus solution"

June 13, 2009  |  By primecipher

 |  Version: Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0.0.125

Pros

Very high detection rates
Cannot be circumvented as easily as any other antivirus program
Low false positives with extended security features
Install it and forget it
Customer service will go above and beyond the call of duty

Cons

There is nothing negative I can truthfully say about this product.

Summary

We had a network issue that I thought might have been caused by a recent Kaspersky implementation. I contacted customer service and they helped resolve the issue even though it was NOT caused by their product. Amazing.

Updated on Aug 9, 2011

Great software, horrible company. Don't ever think you will be able to transfer licenses to new or renewed computers. Software remains highly rated but support = zero stars.

"Nothing great!"

April 20, 2009  |  By kathirv

 |  Version: Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0.0.125

Pros

Nothing much to mention

Cons

This tool is highly priced and I am really disappointed to know that the tool expired 7 days before the actual date. I browsed my bank statements and now I am worried that my password might have been hacked...

Summary

This tool may be good but I have not had a chance to note the good things.

"Great security system!"

April 16, 2009  |  By buddypersonguy

 |  Version: Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0.0.125

Pros

It uses hardly any RAM and the support is good. I also like that they offer online courses. It fixed up my computer much faster and more efficiently than other internet security systems such as Nortan & McAfee. I also like its hourly updates!

Cons

I can't think of anything negative about it.

Summary

In this user's opinion, Kaspersky Internet Security is the best one out there. I love all of it's features including Online courses and hourly updates. I also love that it takes very little RAM to run. Other security systems took up way too much. Not to mention how efficient it is.

"Not as good."

February 14, 2009  |  By ChocoChips

 |  Version: Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0.0.125

Pros

- Strong firewall
- Strong virus protection , updates mostly every hour

Cons

- False positives are outrageous
- Virus removal barely works

Summary

I installed it in my computer and one day it caught a virus. When removing , the virus kept on coming back. And as time goes , more and more viruses came into my computer but Kaspersky couldn't remove it completely. Disappointed me though. However , Kaspersky 8 worked a lot better.

"2 Years and no viruses, annoyware or problems!"

February 07, 2009  |  By m3linko

 |  Version: Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0.0.125

Pros

-2 years and still no virus or spyware!
-Nice interface and easily upgradable
-Can actually be uninstalled!
-Scans EVERYTHING that happens on your PC
-Uses barely any system resources!
-Always updated, updates download fast
-Windows 7 stable!:)works!

Cons

-The email spam scanner is absolutely USELESS, my suggestion would be to just leave it off.
-Honestly I can't think of any more :)

Summary

At first I was weary of Kaspersky because I had never heard of it but I stuck with the reviews and now I'm a loyal KIS customer....2 years running! KIS is great because it offers insanely good protection from everything without bogging down your system. KIS even blocked a few hacker attacks and IP scanners on my University's network and told me the IP of the person responsible, a little talk with the University IT department got him in deep. Like I said above, the email scanner is completely USELESS. Instead of blocking the messages it gives you a popup window asking if you want to view them, if you say "No" or "Yes", either way you still see them except they have a [SPAM] tag in front of them. If you need to open one of them it has to make a copy of the email and put it in your box....also marking it with the tag.....useless. B Who really needs an email scanner though? Just use your brain or Thunderbird and you'll be fine :) Overall this is the best Internet Security Suite I've ever used, hands down!

"Subscribed for one year"

January 28, 2009  |  By Anniekin2

 |  Version: Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0.0.125

Pros

Good AV functionality.

Cons

Not as good as they think they are.

Summary

KIS '07 provided good security for a year. I used it with Vista and although it slowed my system down a little, obviously because it has heuristic scanning, resource use was reasonable and I have not experienced any crashes or system failures, although it does NOT play nice with System Restore.

I disagree with some of the other reviewers who say there is too much user intervention. I appreciate playing an integral role in what is going on in my PC.

But I do agree with reviewer complaints that it is no longer a first rate security program, as well as the poor customer service. After a bad experience on their elitist support forums, attempting to discuss several security issues, I was responded to like the commoner ignorant fool that they must perceive the rest of us to be, and complaints to the company went unaddressed.

Blacklisted keys are also an issue as they are commonly sold on eBay. But in the event of a customer problem where there is any possibility of a valid complaint the issue should be thoroughly investigated in favor of the customer. I think being top notch at one point has made them aggrogant towards their consumers.

I don't know if this is the result of some kind of Russian / US rivalry, but I am happy to go with Avira AntiVir now.

"Complete protection but nowhere near norton yet"

January 19, 2009  |  By drunken-cobra

 |  Version: Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0.0.125

Pros

uses little ram, little hard disc space used up and uses one of the best antivirus engines ever

Cons

Not as small as Norton's version and not as practical as bitdefender's gamesafe. Also, i found out that you need to be a computer nerd to uninstall it completely instead of popups saying "Kaspersky cannot load up without the file KLicense.dat.
