Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 returns as a top-notch security suite with improved overall performance, a slight interface refresh, and new countermeasures against zero-day attacks.

Since last year's release, Kaspersky 2014's design comes with minimal changes to its interface. The mobile-style drawer also makes a return, which reveals extra tools like parental controls, network monitoring, and application controls.

The extraneous arrows and flap-like carousel buttons have all been consolidated into a single-drawer button, following Windows 8-like behaviors. The main interface has been stripped down even more for a much cleaner, uncluttered look.

Menus and settings have also gotten a much more approachable overhaul, as well; the Protection Center, for example, now looks less archaic thanks to having its older radio buttons and checkboxes replaced with a more modern toggle setting for each security function.

New in 2014 is the Application Control Center, a hybrid between a system monitor and task manager. From here, you can monitor and control what applications and process run, to reduce load on your CPU and memory usage. At first glance, it looks like a rebranded task manager, but Kaspersky incorporates a Popularity cue that indicates a level of reliability, presumably from other Kaspersky users.

Under the hood, Kaspersky also announced incorporation of an in-house built protection technology called ZETA Shield (ZETA = Zero-day Exploit and Targeted Attack). Originally unveiled last year in Kaspersky Labs, the latest version indicates its eventual trickling into the consumer versions of the company's flagship security suite.

Kaspersky is known for taking its sweet time when it comes to system scans but this year's version definitely marks a huge speed boost. Initial full scan took about 18 minutes and 43 seconds, vs. the 1 hour and 32 minutes from last year. Rootkit scans also completed at a respectable three minutes flat, vs. the eight minutes and 32 seconds scan time from version 2013.

Boot up times averaged out to be 45.43 seconds, which is slightly faster than our initial testing setup. Shut down times took a hit, averaging at 11.48 seconds vs. the normal 7.8 seconds. Cinebench scores were minimally impacted at 17147. All numbers are improvements across the board vs. last year's Internet Security edition, meaning that Kaspersky 2014 is just about in every way faster, smarter, and cleaner than its former self. That's saying something.

As of yet, both AV-Test and AV-comparatives.org have yet to post results for 2014. Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 has consistently maintained high marks in AV-Tests.org's evaluations, with perfect 6/6 scores in Protection and Usability, and a commendable 4.5/6 in Performance. However, we'd expect these numbers to go up once AV-Test releases their own evaluations of version 2014.

Kaspersky Internet Security maintains its price at $79.95, which seemed steep last year, but this year's scores indicate a well-rounded update that continues to highlight corporate level security in the hands of consumers, as marked by ZETA Shield's making its way into this year's products. Last year's excellent Safe Money features are also still present, giving you some peace of mind when logging into your financial accounts via the sandbox browser. Both Anti-Virus and Internet Security should provide ample protection for your PC and minor footprints.

"Horrible!!"

June 20, 2014  |  By kayann1972

 |  Version: Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 14.0.0.4651

Pros

ZERO! This is nothing good about Kaspersky Internet Security 2014!!!

Cons

I was told by Best Buy Kaspersky Internet Security was the best one to get so I paid the $65 for it. After I installed it I immediately started having issues with Netflix. Kaspersky is NOT compatible with Microsoft Silverlight! I called Microsoft to see if they could help fix the issue and that's when I found out I had 152 BAD virus's on my computer and Kaspersky did NOT catch even 1 of them! They also found evidence of someone trying to hack into my computer, did Kaspersky catch that NOPE! I ended up having to pay $149 to get all the virus's off of my computer. I have since had to call Microsoft 5 times in the past 6 weeks and have virus's removed. Again nothing caught by Kaspersky!I am angry at what a waste of money this software was! I tried to return it to Best Buy 7 days after I bought and surprise you can't return software.DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT IT IS WORTHLESS!Oh yeah, and the only way to watch Netflix is to disable Kaspersky!

"Stick with MSE and Malwarebytes!"

December 08, 2013  |  By ketchumite

 |  Version: Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 14.0.0.4651

Pros

None that I can find.

Cons

Locking up a system is not acceptable.

Summary

Stick with Microsoft Security Essentials (install first) and use Malwarebytes. Both are FREE. You have the option to purchase Malwarebytes. I do not recommend this as running both concurrent at start-up can cause conflict. Just stick with the free version and run it manually as often as you would like. There is NO antivirus on the market that is going to protect you 100% - manual intervention by periodically running scans yourself is key - Don't wait for the software to "do it's thing"... Don't be lazy! I agree, Norton and McAfee are THE WORST!!! Watch out for those "remote" repair guys - I have been doing remote work for 10 years now, in the IT business for 27... Be careful who you allow on your system! I Started with Cray Super Computers, IBM Mainframes and then decided to help the public with home PC's. I hope this info helps someone out there.

"One of the best Security software out there"

November 30, 2013  |  By irishbob

 |  Version: Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 14.0.0.4651

Pros

It provides real time protection.

It gives me flexibility to modify the system to my needs.

I had to turn off the protection in order to download and work on Outlook and Kaspersky popped up some windows to remind me about all the items I turned off and to choose if I wanted to start them again.

I love the idea of Safe Money as it protects my banks accounts, debit cards and credit cards away from prying eyes.

The encryption value is valuable for things like my confidential files such as the one where I keep all my passwords and handles in case my Password Vault fails.

The Additional Tools section is loaded with options where I can modify my settings to insure the greatest amount of protection for my needs which are tight, tight and tight.

Cons

The Virtual keyboard is a great idea in its concept. However, there is no documentation, instructions or guides as how to become an asset and not a pain the a**.

I would like a way to access my list of existing cookies so I can review them as needed. While Kaspersky does a great job of identifying malicious emails; I want to have the ability to screen Third Party cookies since I am computer savvy and have a pretty good idea of what I should or should not allow. However, another great feature to have would be to run a scan of Third Party cookies that I approved (less than 1% of 3rd Party Cookies) in the event I mistaken approve a malicious cookie of any kind.

I have another program SpyHunter that I run when no other scanning software is running. I ran it four times after I was able to re-install and each time it found more and more malicious cookies for a total of 299. SpyHunter stopped Chrome from download malicious files without my permission ands they caused real problems for me.

NOTATIONS REGARDING THE MENTION OF OTHER SERVICES/COMPANIES/PRODCTS

Any mention of any other services in this review are just for the purposes of giving the readers a complete and honest snapshot of what I had been dealing with and how I was able to address various problems.

I ALSO WANT TO MAKE IT PERFECTLY CLEAR; I HAVE NO OWNERSHIP, STOCKS NOR ANY FINANCIAL INTERESTS OF ANY KIND IN THE SERVICES I MENTION IN THIS REVIEW.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES IS THE MENTION OF THESE OTHER SERVICES TO BE CONSIDERED AN ENDORSEMENT OR ADVERTISEMENT.

You are encouraged to do your research on whatever products/services you are considering. Use the outcome of your research to decide what is best for you.

NOTATIONS REGARDING PROS

I have learned my lessons the hard way about allowing any tech remote access to allegedly fix my problems. Both SACH Solutions and Advanced Technologies were to fix just TWO PROBLEMS. Neither was fixed and I ended up with 30+ problems. Including allowing five "out of country" hackers to set themselves as OUTLOOK users, blocking me from using it. When I got it to run; it would crash, constantly go into "NOT RESPONING", freeze up for an indeterminate amount of time while I was typing, and abruptly switch to another program in the midst of doing something in Outlook.

Fortunately for me I got an ACE tech from my domain and email management service (1an1.com) who spent over TWO HOURS with me until we found the problems, solutions, implemented them, tested them to insure assured we addressed all of them. Overall got a lot of my issues those two jokes of remote access companies created and may my life a living hell for a month.

It was he who discovered the foreign users in my Outlook. After we wiped out all Users, including mine, we step up a completely new user and that resolved the problems. Now my Outlook is working like it brand new.

I was disappointed that Kaspersky did not catch that major OUTLOOK show stoppers.

I was also had problems with IE crashing (all versions from 8 to 11) immediately when I brought it up. I also could not watch Netflix, as it would revert to a page saying " "SSL Connection Error". When you click on the message MORE; I got this: "Unable to make a secure connection to the server. This may be problems with the server, or it may require a client authorization certificate you do not have. ERROR CODE: ERR_SSL-PROTOCOL_ERROR."

Chrome and Google search attempts came back with the same SSL Error message. Yet when I used Bing; I got the search results with no error messages.

Again, Kaspersky did not uncover nor able to do anything to address the SSL Connection Error situation. SpyHunter and 1and1.com not only got my IE working again but no more SSL Connection Errors on IE. I can watch my Netflix and other videos. YEAH!!!

All in all, I gave Kaspersky four stars because it has a lot of great features. It is one of the best Security Software out there. I am also impressed with the speed of contacting Kaspersky Support both by phone, online Support tickets and email. They also, in my opinion, give me respect and do not try to treat me like the Village Idiot who could not find his way out of wet paper bag with both ends open. I also, again in my opinion, have shown me honor and appreciate the value I bring to them as a CLIENT and not just another customer. There is a big difference between being treated as a Client versus being treated as a customer.

Formerly, I used Norton 360 for many years. I had no idea of how much they were lacking in terms of features until I stumbled, yes stumbled across an ad on some pages I was surfing, about Kaspersky being far better than Norton 360.

I learned some time ago; it is not best to make any purchase on the fly, especially online as there is so much hype and EL TORO GRANDE. The reason for this mindset is I want to be able to research as much as I can from unbiased reviews of any product or service that I am considering purchasing.

I only wish I would have done the same with SACH Solutions and Advanced Technologies, but my sense of urgency allowed my logic ride the horse of emotions.

I would have saved over a month of lost productivity, frustration; malicious access by hackers accessing God knows what was done on and to my computer along with the inability to get my important every day work done, purging files, corrupting programs and files..

FYI. I just ran SpyHunter again while I was typing this and in the first five minutes it uncovered another 99 malicious items of all kinds from minor to major. 82 of them alone came from Chrome. So I manually run SpyHunter twice a day. I suspect that once I get rid of all traces of Chrome, Google and their toolbars; I will have to deal with far less malicious items.

Now that I have IE working again; it is time to say good riddance to Chrome and Google as they have been major sources of my headaches and frustration for me by allowing malicious items to be downloaded without my permission and authorization. The other question I have is why Kaspersky didn't catch them at all while SpyHunter caught them in a heartbeat.

It may serve Kaspersky well to find out what SpyHunter is doing to catch so many things that Kaspersky did not even know they were are on my computer.

FINALLY, BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST; I STRONGLY recommend you STAY AWAY from NORTON products as they not lack many, many features you get from Kaspersky but their Customer Service (or lack thereof) both on the phone, online chat and message sent to Customer Service is horrific in my opinion.

Also, Norton products, SACH Solutions and Advanced Technical Support are three of the companies that showed me constant disrespect, lack of appreciation and while they write they say they honor me as a "customer"; their actions say just the complete opposite. ACTIONS DO SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS.

These are three of the companies that tried to make me think/feel I was the Village Idiot who could not find my way out of a wet paper bag with both ends open. "NO ONE CAN MAKE ME FEEL ANYTHING WITHOUT MY PERSMISSION." Eleanor Roosevelt

I hope this review has been helpful when deciding what Security software you want for your computer. Just remember Kaspersky, Kaspersky, and Kaspersky.

Oh BTW, did I mention Kaspersky is tops in my book and should you choose to use their services this would NOT be a purchase but an INVESTMENT in protecting your computer(s).

So I gladly pay my annual subscription fee. When it is possible I purchase a multi-year contract, especially when they have a promotion.

"Best of Kaspersky"

October 08, 2013  |  By chedgejr

 |  Version: Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 14.0.0.4651

Pros

+ Very Similar to 2013 (13.0.0.X)
+ Enhanced Scan UI. It will disclose more details
+ It even offers a free password encryption software.
+ It is not as heavy as other reviews state. No pun intended.
+ It will allow you to eliminate all threats at once when prompted with one.
+ Much better virus detection
+ Leaves Bitdefender and Norton in the dust. *********NO PUN INTENDED**********
+ More Flexibility for your needs.
+ TWO WAY FIREWALL!!!!
+ Quick upgrade from K.I.S. 2013

Cons

- Trouble starting up for the first time. (Not going to terribly affect my rating)

Summary

In conclusion, Much better and much more affordable than Bitdefender and Norton. Great utilities and extras. Norton and Bitdefender have to try harder.

NOTE: Even if it is made by Russians (no pun intended to Rafik_A ) . It is your money use it how you like. This is a good product.

"Windows 8 they are NOT ready!"

October 05, 2013  |  By KuroCloud27

 |  Version: Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 14.0.0.4651

Pros

Kaspersky allows users who already have a subscription key download the new 2014 Kaspersky Anti-Virus for free.
2014 has the familiar look and tools like the compatibility checker I have been using for years and I have never gotten a virus or root-kit, or anything.

Cons

Constantly makes my computer have error messages and restart. (other anti-virus programs run smoothly)
The program makes my laptop run slow.
This program makes my laptop unreliable and is not working well with Windows 8.

Summary

They may be able to improve compatibility but until then I will have to use the Windows Defender or use another anti-virus program provider, whom I have always not trusted, but I know their product works and does not slow or cause errors EVERY DAY multiple times like Kaspersky 2014 does.

Updated on Oct 11, 2013

Kaspersky 2014 is fixed!! Whatever was in the recent updates must have satisfied my laptop because 3 days and counting no blue screen, no sudden shutdowns, and no error messages. The scans seem to initialize and run smoother as well. Thank You Kaspersky I am glad I did not have to get another anti-virus provider.

"Slowed down my notebook"

September 28, 2013  |  By bigears625

 |  Version: Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 14.0.0.4651

Pros

Tried the free trial of the premium version. Probably is a great AV but slowed down and froze up everything on my notebook.

Cons

Leaves leftover files and registry keys which cannot be open or deleted normally. Even after removal the start up screen and taskbar icon would try to run...UGH..finally searched "kaspersky removal tool" and used their own website and download to remove their own spy ware..?? nice...really..!!

"Flawed,Unreliable and"

September 21, 2013  |  By AngryStovies

 |  Version: Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 14.0.0.4651

Pros

Great for protection while surfing picks up most threats.
Works well with XP.
AV scans not too bad for speed.

Cons

Crashes on Win 7 every 2 mins leaving no protection.
Slow to activate on start up. Slow update servers.
Terrible on preventing any outbound leaks.

Summary

Really, really disappointing. KIS 2013 was buggy but KIS 2014 for me is literally useless in my Win 7 machine. Had to go back to KIS 2013. I've been using KIS for about 6 years but I have now lost any faith in it.
