"Beware version 8.0!"
Pros
I have used K-Lite before in two different versions with no problems, and the codec files work fine. However, I have to warn against installing V. 8.8. The file I downloaded as FFDshow installer contained malware. Specifically, the Funmoods toolbar. Even after I uninstalled the Funmoods toolbar, using IObit Uninstaller to uninstall and scan the registry, both IE and Firefox would freeze on the second page, necessitating a hard reboot. Spybot Search and Destroy located another malware file, and removed it, but I finally had to use System Restore to get rid of the mess Funmoods left behind it. It apparently changed the names of files and folders so neither browser could find them, so they froze.

The latest version has malware attached.
Summary
If you can't find an older version of K-Lite, you might want to avoid it entirely until the malware is wholly removed. Version 7 worked well, and was safe. Same of version 6.
