Editors' Review

What began as a freeware project to easily share basic screen captures and screen recordings has grown into a solid application and capture distribution system with a premium component. Jing's attractive application takes a sound, simple approach to capturing; begin by dragging the crosshairs to define your capture field and then take a still or start a recording. When you're done, save it to your computer or upload it to Screencast.com (operated by Jing's publisher), an FTP site, Flickr, or YouTube (for a premium). If you've got Snagit or Camtasia Studio, TechSmith's premium programs for capturing and editing stills and videos, respectively, you can click a button on the post-capture toolbar to send the capture along for deeper editing than Jing's basics can supply.

Apart from sharing ease, Jing has some other clever features that don't diminish its conscious simplicity. The yellow "sun" icon that can be moved around the edges of your screen is what you hover over to get started, though in the brief preferences menu you can hide the sun and call up the crosshairs with a hot key. Two other hot keys now help Jing's capture crosshairs snap to common aspect ratios. Press Ctrl to maintain a 4:3 aspect ratio and Shift for 16:9 wide-screen proportions. While locked into a ratio, dragging out the crosshair shows you boundaries for common screen measurements within that ratio that you can easily snap to, like 320x240 or 640x480. This is a nice addition in keeping with Jing's visual, low-text-density design.

In the latest release, subscribers to the $15-a-year Jing Pro gain the ability to record from their Webcam. You can toggle between Webcam and screen recording during a screen capture.

Less convenient is the requirement of the Microsoft .NET Framework, which can take several minutes to install if it's absent. Once that's out of the way, though, you've got on your hands a well-featured screen capture app that's visual enough for nontechies to use and has enough features for sharehounds to easily distribute recordings and images that require limited post-capture modifications.

"Great program BUT sound recording is very bad"

August 24, 2010  |  By PaulTSS

 |  Version: Jing 2.3.10089

Pros

it's captures video well

Cons

Sound recording is very very low, I'd give it 5 stars if only it could record sound properly.

Summary

They claim that they just use the same default input device as any other program on your computer. I use Skype with perfect sound. I have to ramp up the input volume and + talk as loudly as I can, very close to the mic, and then I can almost be heard in the recording.
I have loaded Jing on 4 different computers. Each time bad sound.

"Annoying splash screen"

July 16, 2010  |  By Twistedcan

 |  Version: Jing 2.3.10089

Pros

None i could try

Cons

Annoying splash screen making it impossible to use on 10 inch wide screen computers.

Summary

The program starts with this annoying splash screen taking op more space than my screen size. Unfortunately you can only drag the screen in the top corners and you need to click a button in the buttom of the screen. Even by top resolution i never managed to get beyond the splash screen and was never able to actually try the software. Think again :-(

"Nice But have ISSUES with Errors!"

June 14, 2010  |  By QuietStormX

 |  Version: Jing 2.3.10089

Pros

It's simple and quick, when it works and loads.

Cons

For about two now I've had issues with Jing having (Root element) issues. It can't fing the Screencast registration, and it reverts to new user. Have to sign back in and refuse to upgrade to Jing pro everyday and every startup.

Summary

No Support or help with program Issues and a huge bug with the program not loading at startup. (Root element) Issues. Can't find and read the file. So it reverts back to new user!

"No sir, I don't like it!"

June 13, 2010  |  By MrCoffeeMaker

 |  Version: Jing 2.3.10089

Pros

You got me.

Cons

After the installation, you'll have no choice but to run the tutorial, and after the tutorial you'll have no choice but to sign up for an account. Why? To share things online, even if you have no intention of sharing things online. Continued below

Summary

After going through the installation, tutorial and sign-up, I found that there was no desktop icon, only the sun icon (written of in cnet's publisher's description) after you start the program. The first time I tried to make a recording, after approximately 3 minutes, the program crashed and didn't even ask me before-hand or after where I wanted to save the video to. Now, after searching all my folders, I have a video floating around somewhere in my computer that I can't find. Honestly, cnet's publishers have always been right on the money about everything else, I wonder what type of bribe it took for them to give this a good review.

"Saving only as SWF makes this program worthless to me."

May 08, 2010  |  By jmjanzen

 |  Version: Jing 2.3.10089

Pros

easy to use

Cons

only saves as SWF, which I can't import into other video software (without downloading another app to convert). this is a LIMITATION OF THE FREE VERSION. with pro, you can save as MPEG-4.

Summary

i'm sorry, but file format compatibility trumps all other program features. this free version of the program just wasted a lot of my time. DO NOT DOWNLOAD unless you are really only interested in SHARING video online with people who have flash--ahem, not apple iphone users.

"Do NOT ever try to install"

May 05, 2010  |  By edwardkieran

 |  Version: Jing 2.3.10089

Pros

I cannot tell anything pro for this program.

Cons

It is free for 5 mins! and the recorded video is not even 5 mins.

Summary

Whenever I search a program I was sorting them by Editor's rating, from now on what I am going to read first would be user reviews. How come editors rate this crap so high I can't understand.
