    "Essential tool for every computer."

    August 3, 2010  |   By andreaborman

Version: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 20

    Pros

Java is needed in order to perform most tasks on the web and on your computer.

    Cons

There is a security risk of attracting viruses on your Pc with this tool but at the moment there is no choice as without Java on our computer,a lot of features will not work.

    Summary

Java is a mandatory tool for all computers and laptops as without this you cannot view certain websites or access other web applications or perform other tasks on the web. When I scanned my computer it showed Java as a security risk. However when I uninstalled it, I found websites to be slower and I got an error message on my laptop. So I had to put it back again on my computer. Secunia, the tool I use to scan my software says Java is insecure and should be uninstalled. But because there is no real alternative to Java,as other alternatives may not be recognised by Windows,at the moment we do not have a choice. We have to keep Java on our computers until they find an alternative to this software.

As I mentioned in my last review Java is a program that has been used by a lot of websites but I have been reading some of the latest articles about if it is possible for your computer to function without Java or an alternative to it.I found out that a lot of websites no longer use Java now and the articles advised that you should only install Java if you have to.This seems to be right as when I got my laptop it never had Java installed ,I had to install it myself. which suggests a PC can function without Java. Before I said when I uninstalled java some websites were slow. But I found out this was the website NOT the fact that Java was uninstalled as when I visited these sites again with Java re-installed,they were still slow.So I tried uninstalling Java again and I find my web browsers work much faster without it.Nothing on my computer is effected by the absence of Java. also Java in not a secure program so a PC is safer without Java. So am going to see how it goes without Java.

Version: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 20

    Pros

Well...I need it to be able to use my computer!

    Cons

Too much junk gets through! I've updated numerous times in the last 9 monthes. This time Cnet took me to a download file that my internet security program denied. I had to go search for a new/safe download myself, so then what's TechTracker doing?

    May 5, 2010  |   By Steven J Clark

Version: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 20

    Pros

It doesn't ask, it just does sits job and you never even know it is there but you do if you don't

    Cons

The auatomatic update process sems to work only about half of the time; I have to go looking for it.

    Summary

Since many (most?) online activities require Java to run you need it but it runs so smoothly you never even know it is there but you sure find out if you don't have it. Never had a problem with it.
