The Java 2 Runtime Environment (also known as Java Runtime or JRE) consists of the Java Virtual Machine, the Java platform core classes, and supporting files. It is the runtime part of the Java 2 Development Kit, but without the development tools such as compilers and debuggers. The Windows version of the JRE is packaged with the Java Plug-in, a software product that enables Web browsers to use JRE 1.2 to run 1.2 (Java 2)-based applets. Version 1.2.1 included a fix for a bug in the SDK that posed a potential security risk by allowing an untrusted applet to execute unverified code under certain circumstances. Version 1.2.2 was a maintenance release containing bug fixes and performance enhancements. Version 1.3.0 is an upgrade release that contains new functionality and APIs, performance enhancements, and bug fixes in many areas.
