Editors' Review

+

The first thing users of this freeware WordPad/Notepad replacement will notice is the unusual interface. Jarte actually uses a simple layout, with a default brushed-metal skin and mouse-over icons that reveal standard Menu bar drop-down menus, but this isn't your basic 1990s UI. Just the mere fact of having something different to look at is appealing, and generally it works well. The icons are a bit small, and there's a fair bit of empty space around them so they look somewhat bereft of context.

It turns out Jarte has two other interface schemes. One is an expanded "classic" layout, while the other is a minimalist and familiar Menubar. Behind these different approaches lies many familiar writing and note-taking tools bolstered by small tweaks that make Jarte's appeal obvious. A mouse-over chart icon gives you word, character, page, and line counts. Table, special character, and equation support make Jarte a good, lightweight editor, but the built-in scalable screen-capping utility push it towards greatness. The included spell-checker was adequate, but not great, although the clipboard can hold 25 items at once. DOC, RTF and TXT formats are supported, and there's an Export tool that converts documents into PDFs and HTML. Like other Notepad replacements, Jarte offers tabs for keeping multiple files open at once.

The stability issues and function failures of previous versions were non-existent in our latest test of Jarte. The clickless, mouse-over-based navigation may sound a bit intimidating, but it makes getting around in the app noticeably fast. If you're in the market for a Notepad or WordPad alternative, Jarte's mix of style and utility is about as different from the mainstream as you can get.

"Good, but better is available"

September 13, 2008  |  By RobD60

 |  Version: Jarte 3.3

Pros

Basic, simple, nice layout options

Cons

Several features that other programs provide free are only available in the paid version

Summary

Jarte has always had a nice interface, with different tools quickly available through highly customizable layout options. You'll find a large writing area, with a tool panel to the left (which is not enabled by default; turn it on by choosing Classic Layout or with the F11 shortcut key). Play with the options to get the look and feel you want. But you'll have basic choices for indents, for example: quarter-inch or half-inch only; no slide bar on the ruler (which also is disabled by default). You have the option for clickless menu selection (not that clicking is all that hard, but still clickless is fun and feels easier). Export to PDF (but only with PrimoPDF or the like) or HTML; save as RTF or TXT. Open DOC or DOCX files (but, apparently, not ODF files). No footnote feature; and single columns only, if you please. AutoCorrect, AutoComplete Background Spellcheck, features available in other free options (think OOo or Symphony), are only available in Jarte in the paid version. Nor can you modify styles (though most users won't need to).

If I were to recommend a stripped-down, basic free word processor, I'd still pick RoughDraft (which hasn't been updated in about 3 years) ahead of Jarte. AbiWord has even more options than either RoughDraft or Jarte and is also free. Neither has AutoCorrect but both do have AutoComplete and Background Spellcheck. RoughDraft also has screenwriting and playwriting formats but formats only in TXT or RTF; AbiWord lets you modify and create styles and opens (or has plugins available for) a number of formats. You'll give up a nice UI, though.

"Brilliant little program"

August 20, 2009  |  By petersellmer

 |  Version: Jarte 3.3

Pros

intuitive, fast, compact

Cons

Limited in it's ability to open complex documents, occasional crash

Summary

98% of my writing is very basic so using Word is overkill. Problem with word pad is that it's a little underpowered; Jarte is the perfect mix of useful features for everyday wording. I bought the pro for the extra features and am very pleased!

Pros

Jarte is very esy to use. You boot it up, and just write. Nice.

There doesn't seem to be as much variety with Jarte as it is with Microsoft Windows.

Summary

For ease of operation, use Jarte.

"use it every day"

July 14, 2009  |  By kfowler131

 |  Version: Jarte 3.3

Pros

The best little word processor program I have ever had--buy it!
Have word 2007, but for the web, and letters, Jarte 3.3 is the best

Cons

not one thing

Summary

Been using this program since it's inception. Started out using the trial version years ago. Bought it--very low priced for all it can do.
Selectable Screen captures, holds 25 clips (great for the web), opens word docx! And there have been three updates, all of them free, even the one for vista. Which, was more of a upgrade, but was still free!
Years ago asked the writer a question and he personally wrote me back!

"Very good program for the price.."

April 16, 2009  |  By OldeFart

 |  Version: Jarte 3.3

Pros

Has everything that paint has with a few bonuses..

Cons

For what it is, no dislikes at all..

Summary

Dictionary, thasaurus, word spell, encyclopedia and screen capture this free software has it all.. Even a background option.. That your directed to a web sight and not in it's own program is what you get for such a minute power eater.. It's functions rival some lower end (affordable) programs.. And making it free simply sells itself.. Go get.

"Love it! Use it everyday."

March 12, 2009  |  By James Thomas

 |  Version: Jarte 3.3

Pros

This may very well be the fastest loading program I've ever used. It's up and ready in 2 seconds flat. It has a very clean, attractive and user friendly interface.

Cons

It can't do what a full fledged word processor can do. But it wasn't designed to. You want that, I suggest the free open-source Open Office Suite.

Summary

Wonderful little program. You just pass the curser over a few buttons (no need to click) and an intuitive picture control panel off to the left gives you options.

90% of my basic word processing is via this little gem. Seldom do you see a program that has been thought-through and put together so extremely well....and it's FREE no less. I really think you'll love it too.
