Summary
The Jabber IM network is completely open, so if something about it isn't good enough, it can always be made better by simple implementation. If your improvement is good, people will use it, and it'll become at least a de facto standard. If you document what you did, there's a good chance that it'll be incorperated into the standard distros of many clients/servers, and maybe even added to the spec. As for JIM (JabberIM), I found it to be an excellent first Jabber client for those who already know how to use AIM. The interface is quite intuitive, and there are many features hidden behind the pretty front-end. The only funny thing about it for an AIM user is that you can get a whole bunch of messages when you login, and wonder "How did they send those messages so quickly?" The thing is, unlike AIM, Jabber can send offline messages. (Take a look at the timestamps on the messages, and you'll see it actually took them a few _hours_ to send those messages ... LOL. . .)
