      "Bravo!"

      June 03, 2006   |   By Stormchild

      Version: JEDict 4.1

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Nicely done! Just a few days after I posted my last review, a new update is released that addresses pretty much all the issues I had. It is now possible to drag Kanji and components, the Kanji size can now be changed for the large buttons on the Kanji page, and Romaji transcriptions are now completely hidden when that option is set.

I'd still like to see an option added to look up characters by the Heisig index, since it's now possible to search by most of the other indices.

About the only gripe I still have is that there's no upgrade price for current users. There should always be a cheaper upgrade price for new versions of software. But oh well, I'll pay the full price again, and support the developer for his ongoing work on this very important tool.

"Version 4 is one step forward, three steps back"

      May 29, 2006   |   By Stormchild

      Version: JEDict 4.0.4

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've been using JEDict 3 for several years, and it's one of the most essential apps on my system. I really wanted to like version 4, and I've waited for a few updates to give it a chance, but even now that the bugs and crashes seem to be worked out, it's still not doing it for me. Many of the things I could do in JEDict 3 are no longer possible in 4.x, such as:

      1. In v3, you can drag one or more kanji from any page onto the Kanji tab, and it will load all of them into the window. In v4, you cannot drag to the Kanji tab; you have to copy to the clipboard, switch to the Kanji tab manually, then perform the search manually. Three steps instead of one, and now it uses the clipboard as well -- previously I could look up characters this way without clearing what I had on the clipboard before.

      2. In v3, when you look up a character on the Kanji page, the components can be dragged to the search filter, and you can very quickly look up other characters containing one or more of the same components as the current character. In v4, it's no longer possible to drag those components; you must now find them again manually in the full list of graphemes.

      3. In v3 you could change the size of the Kanji buttons in the Kanji page. In v4 it's locked at 24 pt, which makes some of the complex ones rather difficult to read. I had it set at 40 pt in v3, and now I can't do that anymore.

      Some other issues:

      - Even when you disable Romaji, it still shows Romaji in the main transcription for a character in the Words page.

      - There is some incorrect information on the JLPT page -- I really hope nobody's using this page to study for the test! For example, the character for "atama" (head) gives the transcription "atama" and the definition "counter for large animals". Although the character can be used for that as well, in that case the transcription is "tou", not "atama", so this is in fact wrong!

On top of removing several useful features, I can't see why the author bothered to build in a web browser; if I want to run Safari, I'll run Safari.

Although I appreciate the attempt to clean up the UI, this upgrade in general seems ill-considered and half-baked. Even if it was a free upgrade, I wouldn't switch to the new version, and I certainly wouldn't pay to lose a bunch of features. This app needs another overhaul; better luck next time.

      "The mother of japanese dictionaries"

      March 25, 2006   |   By maboroshi

      Version: JEDict 4.0.2

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This new version has exactly all the features I've been wanting in 3.8.1.
The ability to search for a kanji by actually writing it out has been a needed feature on the mac for a long time. The way it will automatically search for any new words in your clipboard is another excellent addition.
The web browser is the icing on the cake. Its like having a rikai.com browser built in. Nice!

The new user interface took a little getting used to after using the old one for so long, but that was a minor setback.

      Really well done!

      "The Nicest Ever"

      November 20, 2005   |   By Shigerello--2008

      Version: JEDict 3.8.1

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
JEDict is the best Japanese-English dictionary among any of that kind, I think.

Its Kanji consulting system is awsome.
From main clues for distinction of Kanji, that are stroke and radical, JEDict can get Kanji exactly you want.
Also explanation of Kanji is detailed, so that makes you comfort enough, I believe.
I'm familiar with Japanese, but I can see an great and genuin effort in it.

Anyway JEDict is useful and made superior leap between others. You should try it.

Arguably the best J-E digital dictionary around. Provides a great front-end to Jim Breen's compiled dictionaries, adding many useful features, including finding Kanji by drawing the strokes. Indispensible!
