"Controling what your kids do on the internet- excellent"
Version: Intego ContentBarrier 10.5.5
Pros
- good website filtering by categories
- blocks social network sites and streaming sites
- can schedule the internet access of my 2 kids
- doesn't slow down my browser at all :-)
- remote web administration is also cool: -))))Cons
only one thing I don't like is the price...should be $29.95
Summary
All parents should have this software, I have 2 kids and have set each child different access according to what I think they should be allowed to view. I have also blocked video play and peer to peer as I don't want either of them looking at videos or downloading stuff they shouldn't. You can also see a report of each website visited and if they have tried to visit and blocked sites which is really good.
Also something I've found really good is you can limit the amount of time they are allow to be on the internet on any day at any time. I have set them both up so they can go on in the evening when they get home from school but only for 1 hour max - the software just stops them accessing any longer. Its really useful to have because I don't have to keep checking that they are spending lots of time on the web. -
"Pleased after couple of years"
Version: Intego ContentBarrier 10.4.4

I have had CB installed at the family computer for about 2 years. If your circumstances call for parental controls, CB is worth the money for the app and the filter maintenance. The filter, updated periodically, is a key feature that is not provided by the OS. When an ok site happens to be blocked, that is fine with me, as it gives our little users a reminder that CB is on guard. And of course, no filter is total. Schedule of access is very easily set up or modified. The app is very solid. My advice is, don't be tempted to get by with something less. -
"STAY AWAY if you have Leopard (OSX 10.5)"
Version: Intego ContentBarrier 10.4.2
Pros
The install package is nice and orderly, it is highly customizable, and appeared to work well until I re-booted.
Cons
Starting right after the first re-boot after installing ContentBarrier my applications would no longer QUIT, i could close a window but never quit an app, not even force quit. Because of this i had to shutdown the system by holding the power button on my MacBook (not the perferred way to shutdown) it also caused my spaces/dashboard/expose keyboard shortcuts to stop functioning. Additionally my system would run hot, meaning ContentBarrier would take up all of my system processing power, causing the fan to remain on, and battery to drain faster. Finally, uninstalling it was more difficult than normal, to properly un-install and bring order back to your Mac you MUST use the Intego Install/Un-install program that comes in the download. dragging to the trash DOES NOT get it off your system.

"Good product but support is poor"

Have been using contentbarrier for over 2 years now. The last version works quite fine, but since 4 weeks i am in contact with support for a bug (date not shown in the e-mail logs); they promised a patch, sent it but was not usable, promized another version, and so on. Still unresolved. -
"Works just fine for me!"

I have been using Intego ContentBarrier X4 for over a year. It's installed on the "Family eMac" and it works very well. Each of my kids has different settings which only I control. ContentBarrier successfully prevents the kids from stumbling onto web sites I wouldn't want them to see. ContentBarrier even sends me an email periodically telling me what sites were blocked for each kid! The kids' chats are monitored against preditors and their email is monitored as well. The ability to configure each kid's settings separately is powerful. The older kids get more privledges and the settings for the younger kids are a little more strict. Adults who use the computer aren't monitored at all. -- I looked long and hard for software which would help me ensure the kids have a positive experience online. Thus far, I have found nothing better. Contrary to the last couple posts, I have had no stability problems whatsoever. I'm running OS X 10.4 on a busy machine and ContentBarrier seems to deliver what it promises. (I do wish it were a little less expensive.) -
"Will cause your computer to be unstable, freeze,..."

...crash

I have been a Intego Customer for three years.
OVERALL...EACH OF THERE PRODUCTS ARE DEFECTIVE. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHICH INTEGO PRODUCT YOU USE. IT DAMAGES YOUR COMPUTER.
Problems began with there new product releases. I thought, perhaps it was my problem and not theres. I erased my hard drive and reinstalled osx. Everything worked fine. As soon as I installed Intego. Performance came to a crawl and then CRASH! FREEZE.
I have used there email technical support. So far, they are responsive. However, this does not fix the key problem. Performance and stability.
Uninstalling there product returned my computer performance like "fresh out of the box". Also, my computer no longer freezes and crashes!
Also, the product is over-kill. Blocks everything. Gasp! -
"Completely prevents any access to the internet"

some two weeks ago I installed the new version as a demo cause I had been using v10.1 some time ago and I was very satisfied.
anyway some days after installing the new version (but not shortly enough to be unambiguously obvious) I started having problems with my internet connection: I just couldn't get any webpage to laod, it would just hang after a few kb. all that was still working was my email program, but no http or skype for instance. I ran norton, tech tool and what not just to find out what the hell my problem was. and today it finally came to my mind that maybe content barrier was causing all this trouble (why didn't I think of this earlier??!). so i uninstalled it and guess what... I got my connection back.
so DO NOT install this version until they fix this problem!! apparently i'm not the only one experiencing this. -
"Causes more problems than it's worth"

I've been using ContentBarrier since the last major version first came out (ContentBarrierX). It's a nice program and can work well, but man, it can have a lot of problems too. Yet I keep trying to put up with it since I think it's still the best option if you need parental controls over the web.
The first version of 10.4 caused both my macs to have kernel panics when shutting down the machine. That was a HUGE problem because kernel panics can really mess up your system. It took at least a month for Intego to release an update that fixed the problem. Now that I've installed the update, I again had to disable the program because now it won't allow pages to load completely. Web pages load all items but the last, causing it to just hang there with a white screen. (ie. 43 or 44 items will load and it'll hang there).
Very disappointing. But I still have hopes that they'll fix the problem eventually and I'll happily run the application without knowing it's there. Hopefully. -
"Time Limit issue still plagues version X4"
Version: Intego ContentBarrier 10.4
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I been dealing with this old issue (time limits) with their tech support for almost 2 years. Time limits still doesn't work correctly!
For any of those who been promised it would be fixed in X4, be aware before buying the upgrade, this issue still has not been fixed!
I like the new interface but they seem to have spent more time with that and fix their dammed bugs they introduced in X3.
Customer support is abysmal at best. You be very lucky if you hear back from them by email in 1-2 weeks.
