    "Great programme."

    June 26, 2014  |   By Guy_T

    Version: Inkscape 0.48.4-1

    Pros

Deserves the time you may spend to learn all its rich features, e.g. Filters.

    Cons

Inkscape assumes that if you download it from Thailand, for instance, you speak Thai. Then, menus are in Thai dusted with English words. I could not find any assistance from the Help menu in this regard.

    The trick is:
1/ Click on the last menu on the left.
2/ Scroll it down till you see an entry with a keyboard shortcut = Shift+Ctrl+P. Select this entry.
3/ This opens a page in English (miracle!) "Inkscape preferences". Select "Interface"
4/ On the right of the box "Language", use the selector to scroll a long list of languages.
5/ Select the one you want.
6/ There is no :"Save" button. Just close the page and restart Inkscape.
    (I am indebted to
    http://en.kioskea.net/faq/15154-inkscape-change-language
    for knowing that trick).

    "I can't believe it's free"

    March 18, 2014  |   By Captive_Audience

    Version: Inkscape 0.48.4-1

    Pros

Easy to use and a lot of features.

    Cons

    None that I can see.

    Summary

I think this software is great. I normally use CorelDraw and I will continue to use it, at least for now because I'm used to it. I can't afford the new version of Corel that's compatible with Windows 8.1 so I thought I would try this out. I am surprised at how well it works and all the great features there are.

    "It gets Too slow"

    June 13, 2013  |   By OldNickToo

    Version: Inkscape 0.48.4-1

    Pros

It's easy and fun to use to do stuff.

    Cons

It just got slower and slower as I added to my relatively simple 1st attempt. It became almost unusable. Printing to files like PDF, bitmap were also cripplingly slow.

    Summary

It is fun to use, but gets slow if there is much in the drawing. I did not really try it for technical drawing, to see if it was useful as a real drafting package. I give it 2.5 for being fun

"Can do a decent bit as long as you don't want to print."

    January 3, 2013  |   By roosclan

    Version: Inkscape 0.48.4-1

    Pros

    Pretty versatile

    Cons

    limited export formats -- One
    Not that user-friendly
    CAN'T PRINT

    Summary

I got this as a free option to CorelDRAW, and well... you get what you pay for in this instance. I am a fan of freeware, but Inkscape just doesn't live up to what it is supposed to be. You can do a decent amount of work, but it takes a while to figure out as it is not all that user-friendly.

For several version, the program will not print. I have designed things in Inkscape that I want to take with me into the garage to work on, and I can't because the program acts like it prints, but doesn't send anything to the printer. Several of my friends have had this issue as well, and I have even submitted a bug report on it, to no avail (with many strangers reporting they have the same problem). If you want to export your design so you can print it in another program, you have the option of exporting to a bitmap or... a bitmap.

I hate to say it, but I cannot recommend Inkscape until they get the printing bug fixed. I would like them to make it more versatile when exporting to other formats.

"find another desk & unpack the old MacDraw machine?"

    December 28, 2012  |   By Vladimir_Jabotinsky

    Version: Inkscape 0.48.4-1

    Pros

for free I could accept it isn't yet as great as it sounds

    Cons

v0.48, too bad that's the top 48% instead of basic functions

    Summary

Win 7 64-bit (don't get me started, back to the last big Mac I'll probably ever buy as soon as I can afford it). Couple of crashes with Inkscape running, but that's been about par for my very simple Windows complement.

Still, Inkscape looks like a textbook case of why I'd never install Linux (or any such open-source toys made for it) except in its own little box to play with Unix for free.

What/why is the shadowed box in the middle of every new document and how to get rid of it?
First time I drew rectangles they displayed per the tutorial, since then I can't even create one, except long enuf to establish that the rotate handles don't work. A spiral, yes, great if drawing a snail house. A circle no, fails as a 1:1 rectangle above.

No rulers? "No dedicated Measure tool" ! (faq). So except with repeated application of the one-shot workarounds mentioned by other reviewers here I can't even draw a 6x8' bathroom, let alone the house, or a wall of 1.5x5.5" studs with a 30" door (or Hobbit door) or a window in it, or an elevation?

Or specify, say, 1" = 12" to draw printable scaled plans?

BTW, if you're logged onto (e.g.) Live365 or lastfm radio, the online manual will simply take over that window instead of opening its own, likewise with the one-size-fits-all login service you open to ask them a question.
