"Gone bye bye"

June 04, 2006  |  By Futurological

 |  Version: Impression 3.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Iâ??m using Impression 3.0 (93) on a Powerbook G4 1.25. Iâ??ve used older versions for about 19 months now. Considering this software is no longer in development or being supported I hope Impression 3.0 continues to cruise along with Mac OS 10.5+ and play nice long into the future.

"Impression is excellent"

April 23, 2005  |  By davebarnes

 |  Version: Impression 2.72

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.

After switching to Mac OS X, I went searching for software to backup my data files. I downloaded trial versions of three after looking at six.

Impression was the winner because it offers verification. That is, it verifys that the data was written accurately. Without verifcation, a backup product is useless as you are never sure what has been written to the backup file.

I use Impression every week and have been very pleased with it.

"Can't restore"

September 19, 2004  |  By khorton

 |  Version: Impression 2.6

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Did a test backup using hfspax format, and then tried to restore to another hard drive. Get an Applescript memory error, and Impression stalled during the restore, with no files restored. The docs do attempt to explain how to restore using the command line, but they appear to only explain how to restore individual files, not the whole backup to another location.

"Now ready for primetime"

August 15, 2004  |  By VersionTrackerUserOpinion

 |  Version: Impression 2.6

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I had some bad experiences with earlier versions of Impression, but 2.6 seems ready for "primetime" and I've now bought a license. The core functionality now seems to be both robust and speedy. Reliability seems good. Both full and incremental backups seem to work. There are minor (very minor) UI issues still to sort out, but the basic backup engine seems to have arrived at the point where you can truly depend on the application, which is exactly what you would expect from something you rely on to make backups.

"Having trouble with hfspax"

March 18, 2004  |  By javastarbuck

 |  Version: Impression 2.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I like this product and have paid for it, but I am having trouble when creating back ups with hfspax archives. After about third CD-ROM disk image the program slows down to an absolute crawl (it uses almost no CPU time). It would be days (if not weeks) to finish the back-up. When I use the Finder-readable file archives method, it is fast and speedy. But using that method you have to manually restore.

"This is a great program, but..."

February 19, 2004  |  By Karsen24

 |  Version: Impression 2.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is a great program, but it's lacking one thing - scheduled backups. If Impression had the ability to operate on an automated schedule it would be the undisputed heavyweight champion of backup utilities. It's elegant, fast and simple to use. As it is Impression is a fine program but it's clunky competition, Retrospect, still holds the crown by default. Please incorporate a scheduled backup system and free us all from Dantz's tyranny!

"The main advantage over all other backup programs..."

January 13, 2004  |  By samibusch

 |  Version: Impression 2.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
...seems to be that Impression is the only one that has fully integrated the handling and burning of optical discs into it. Since I only do backups on DVD-R and CD-R, I think I might buy this. The documentation/manual is good but it could be better, more detailed. My main concern and question: When Impresson splits up one large file into two to write on two CDs (part_a file on first CD, .part_b file on second CD), I have to use Impression to rejoin the two files. But will Impression still be available in ten years time when I run Mac OS XV and I want to recover some old archives?

"Superb"

December 14, 2003  |  By tavvymac

 |  Version: Impression 1.81

Summary

Have tried many backup alternatives to Retrospect and finally found a perfect replacement. Easy to use, incremental, multiple volume backups, excellent support and a developer who cares. One test and the shareware was paid, a quality product.

"Impression does it right"

December 01, 2003  |  By VersionTrackerUserOpinion

 |  Version: Impression 1.81

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Impression is the only backup software that I found that does it right. As server administrators know, backups should not be "clones" of a computer -- they should be copies of the important files that are irreplaceable. Where Impression's ability to backup directly to disk images and CD/DVDs sets it out of the pack, it is Impression's ability to do incremental (very important!) backups and exclude files based on name patterns brings it over the top.
