"Version 1.0.8.1 does not work in Windows 7"
Version: IconRestorer 1.0.7.1
Pros
Nicely presented.
Helpful forum.
Detection of a trojan in the download file in earlier versions seems to have been rectified in the newer version.Cons
Tested by displacing 6 out of 77 desktop icons and restoring them.
Made a complete mess of the desktop layout. Good thing I keep a screen capture backup of the layout on Word.
Did not want to keep on duplicating the restore in case it made an even further mess.
A similar restore with DesktopOK worked perfectly. Also the positions file in desktopOK.ini is available for backing up, not like IconRestorer where the developer expects a donation to release a backup facility which is stored in the registry key FreeSoftLand. There is nothing wrong with that however if the program worked in the first place.
I suggest you keep an eye on the forum before venturing to install IconRestorer as this will tell you if the problems with 1.0.8.1 SR1 have been rectified. 1.0.7.1 has not worked since 2010 and the newer version 1.0.8.1 definitely does not work in Windows 7 32 bit, or Windows Enterprise according to a number of other users.Summary
Version 1.0.7.1 seems to the latest version listed on CNET but 1.0.8.1 is available from the developers web site.
I cannot recommend this program for use in Windows 7.
Suggest you try DesktopOK until the problems are rectified.
Good luck. -
"Great Program"
Version: IconRestorer 1.0.7.1
Pros
Icon Restorer quickly and easily puts things back the way they were after Windows has messed them up yet again.
Cons
It can't be pinned to the recycle Bin like my old favorite, Icon Restore. That made for one less icon cluttering things up.
Summary
This program not only restores your icons, it keeps track of icon layouts for different screen resolutions. For those of us whose eyes aren't as young as they were this is very handy, because I have to change resolution every time a dialog box's "OK" button doesn't fit on the monitor. This still get put where I can find them with this program.
There's a newer version out that CNET doesn't list, so you have to update as soon as you install, but it's no big deal, and is a small inconvenience compared with having to manually reset icons whenever Windows gets in a snit about something.
BTW I'm running W7 Home, 64 bit. -
"Terrific program, does exactly what I wanted."
Version: IconRestorer 1.0.7.1
Pros
I've tried other icon restorer programs, this is the only one that worked well.
Cons
Haven't found any cons, it does what's needed.
Summary
Get this program if you''re sick of STUPID Windows XP coding that shifts your icons every time you happen to move too close to the desktop edges and create idiotic, useless toolbars that no one would ever intentionally want.

"My antivirus prog. cancelled a file regarded as Trogen"
Version: IconRestorer 1.0.7.1
Pros
First installation worked verry well untill antivirus cancelled file «ARTIMIS!505D4D094B75» regarded as trogen by antivirus software.
Cons
Until set back with file «ARTIMIS!505D4D094B75» regarded as trogen by antivirus software, I loved it for it's simplicity. New dowoload in case of contamination resulted in same senario.
Summary
If problem with file «ARTIMIS!505D4D094B75» regarded as trogen is corrected I probably would reinstal.
