IDrive Online Backup is an easy-to-use program that allows users to back up the contents of their computers remotely. With a sleek interface and just enough features, this program is great for users of all levels.

IDrive's interface is attractive and intuitive, with graphical buttons representing its major features. After defining a username and password, users simply select the files they want to back up--the default includes the Desktop and My Documents--and click the Backup Now button. Subsequent backups can be scheduled to run automatically and only back up data that has been modified, making the process quick and efficient. Data is transmitted using 128-bit SSL encryption and stored using 256-bit AES encryption, ensuring that it stays secure. Restoring data is as simple as dragging and dropping it from the storage area to the desired location. Users can access stored data from any machine, even without the software installed. We found the program very easy to use, and we like that it offers something for users of all levels; those who aren't particularly computer literate can easily back up and restore their files without much thought, while more advanced users can customize their backup experience. IDrive's built-in Help file is well-written and thorough, explaining all of the program's features in easy-to-understand language.

IDrive Online Backup is free to try, and the free version gives users 2GB of storage space. The program installs desktop icons without asking but uninstalls cleanly. We recommend this program to all users.

"Finely distilled rubbish of the highest calibre."

Pros

Several - What this company excels at best is helping you spend your money while efficiently wasting your time.

Too, they build a false sense of security, letting you imagine that your data is actually safe and secure somewhere.

Additionally, they are masters at 'cut and paste' when it comes to answering questions - using well-worn and hackneyed platitudes to get you to think that something is actually being done to resolve your issues, all the while doing... exactly nothing. Specifically, if you Google the terms 'idrive slow' you will notice that you will get a minimum of 130,000 hits - all with the same ineffectual, repetitive advice - 'send us an error report...'

Finally, they assist you in the ageing process, as you slowly become grey and start to prepare to 'shuffle off your mortal coil.' How? By moving your data at a speed that is only measurable in terms of glaciation and tectonic drift. Even dial-up literally screams along compared to this.

Cons

Bandwidth issues galore - Colossally slow.

The on-line version of the application generally runs at between 150-500KB/s. My client's data took THREE WEEKS to seed, and it is just under a terabyte. This is remarkable, because the upload from the ISP is 10MB/s.

The Local Backup feature is, weirdly, just as slow. Transferring data to an external drive is, as I write this, running at 500kB/s. I would get better throughput if I was using floppy disks.

Summary

GO WITH ANOTHER SERVICE - ANYONE, JUST NOT THIS ONE. The application was apparently coded by a hundred angry monkeys pounding away at antique Underwood typewriters that had lost the ink ribbon years ago (no offence meant to all our simian friends).

The infrastructure this runs on is a set of rusty tin-cans tied together with a combination of fish-bones, baling wire, twine, chewing gum and the stringy remnants of tobacco once found in some itinerant vagrant's pouch.

Conclusion - if you are looking for a place to spend your money and an opportunity to swing between blinding rage and utter hopelessness or loss, then by all means - purchase this service.

If, however, you wish to remain in business after a technical failure, or have a reliable backup made on a regular, scheduled and timely fashion, GO WITH SOMEONE ELSE.

"!Pathetic!"

I first started experiencing problems with this "service" about three months in. I couldn't delete file that ran me over the limit and I was getting additional charges. The technical support on this problem left me at a point where I just abandoned the product and stopped the backup routine. In the interim, I closed my Chase credit card and opened a new one because of a potential compromise. When I got an e-mail from Idrive stating that they couldn't process the charge and they needed another account number, I ignored it because I had no intention of renewing their clunky product. Lo and behold, somehow they found my new account number and ran the charge against that. I called them to get the charge reversed and I got their "Too bad, so sad" reply because I did not close my account with them within the specified time frame.

Summary

With this type of service is destined for failure. Do not trust them with your data or give them your money.

"Just not ready for prime time."

Right from the get-go, download and startup, nothing worked or was evident as to how to use. And then, after I did get it started up, it ran for Friday through Sunday at home on my MacBook Pro over my high-speed fiber optic network and only backed up 97 GB out of 367GB on my hard drive. Suspended the backup and resumed at work with an even higher speed line for two more days. Contacted Support several times (which took days even to get an email response) and they finally advised that I upgrade to their iDrive Express product. Stopped the whole process and determined that iDrive wasn't for me for I could backup my entire hard drive on an external hard drive over a USB2 connection in a couple of hours and incrementally every week in just a few minutes or so. Also, they wouldn't give me any sort of refund for I waited more than 15 days to ask for it. What kind of warranty is that?

Summary

Been a PC and Mac user since they first arrived on the scene in the '80s and have dealt with many companies and products -- stay away from these guys. Details above, but from download to execution to support and warranty, their whole operation is a scam. To backup your whole hard drive, for today's technology, an external hard drive is the only way to go. iDrive was a very bad experience for me.

"Way too slow and keeps crashing. Tech support no help."

Pros

Tech support was quick to respond but they had no practical solution to the extremely slow upload.

Cons

I bought the 300GB plan and tried to upload 97GB. But it was crawling along at dial up speed and I have an extremely fast service. They offered to send me an external drive which I would then copy my files to and send to them at my expense.

Summary

You'd be better off to simply by an external TB drive than deal with this company.

"Constant Crashes, tech support can't fix!"

Easy interface ONCE you get used to it - confusing at first. Program runs in background and is seamless.

Cons

Although it's seamless, it doesn't work much of the time! Does not respond to "stop" or "delete" for a particular backup, can not change the time of a backup. On phone with tech support several times in the last month each time being told "it's fixed" yet the next backup, same problem so I'm not getting backups. After years of using the product at home and in multiple big offices, will switch - only hope they'll give a refund. By the way, you have to "chat" with higher level support which takes too long. It took 15 minutes for them just to connect to my computer and then I was told that the connection, on their end, was too slow, I should call back!!

Summary

Don't buy, there are others that do the same thing yet seem to be more stable.

"Stopped working, Idrive couldn't fix it, refused refund"

Worked well for the first 6 months.

Cons

After the initial 6 months the backups stopped working. They would hang around 14% and never finish. I contacted IDrive support and spent nearly 6 months going back and forth over the phone and email and they couldn't get it working.

Finally, I decided I would cancel and asked for a prorated refund for the service I never received. They refused to give me a refund for part of the first year and by that time they had already charged me for the second year. After calling my bank they agreed to refund the second year, but still refused to refund for part of the first year. They were very rude as well and told me they normally don't give refunds. Like that was supposed to make feel better. And this was all over $37.12! That includes part of the first year and the second year. How ridiculous is that!

Summary

IDrive backups stopped working and they refused to give me a prorated refund for the service I never received. I will never do business with them again and will warn everyone I can!

"Known bug left files NOT backed up under Windows 7"

Affordable .. but .. if it doesn't do the simple job of backing up your files .. see CONS

I recently discovered that IDRIVE was not backing up certain folders because of a bug where shortcuts - desktop, documents, pictures, etc.. -- do not work properly under Windows 7. I was told this was a known problem, and the work around was to select folders manually under C: drive. When doing this, however, you have to RE-SELECT the folders manually for each backup.

Summary

I dropped IDRIVE. It was inexcusable they knew about the bug that left files not backed up and didn't fix it or at least notify users (me), their "work around" was not usable, and after the recommendation to upgrade (which still had the problems), IDRIVE kept timing-out (program is unresponsive).

"Terrible billing practices"

Inexpensive, and worked fine for me on Windows 7.

BEWARE of iDrive's billing policies - watch out when you upgrade to the paid version!!! I had a problem with running the old v3.4.1 software on Windows Server 2008, so their tech support told me to cancel my account and open a new account and get v5 software, and they would refund the original account for me. I did that, but a month later they had not refunded the old account. They told me they could not refund it, because (a) they counted the 15 days from the start of my free account, not the day I upgraded to the paid version!, and (b) they had no record of my chat session with tech support. I pointed out that they had charged me for two different versions of their software in a one week period, how could that be right?! But my tough luck, they would not refund for the old version that I used for two days and had to remove due to iDrive's problems on Server 2008.

Summary

iDrive's billing practices are ridiculous and should be changed to not penalize people like me who had problems using iDrive on a platform (Windows Server 2008) that iDrive is not supporting very well.

"DECEPTIVE TERRIBLE SERVICE TOO"

WATCH OUT! your "free" trial is not really free if you decide to try an upgrade. After using idrive for a few months I decided to upgrade and also receive new software (the old sw is also used by many other backup solutions, hardly unique but same flaws) I deleted the old software, installed the new. Started the backup. It would hang around 37-45% and not go any further. After realizing they used canned software, the issue when reaching the limit, freezing my pc, new software not backing up beyond 37-45% (only had 7gb) I decided that within 12hr of purchase I wanted a refund. They said that you are only eligible for a refund from the time you start your free trial! So if after 15day of a trial & on day 16 you decide to upgrade for more space but it doesn't work. TOO BAD!! NO REFUND!! because you are only eligible for a refund the first 15 days of use during the free trial. . The free trial period is your refund window. They say it's in the small print. I call it deceptive marketing.

Summary

There is nothing good to be said about this company. I never write reviews but this company is so flagrant with their deception I have to say something. "you refund period starts as soon as you sign up for the free trial." not when you make the purchase. when you make the purchase, even though the new product does not work, too bad.

"Terrible product. Terrible support."

I have a backup now and then.

Cons

Using IDrive on three computers with different accounts for 3 years now. All will simply stop working. IDrive support always replies that the log shows that it succeeded! Then they will get mixed up about which account we're working on. So on and on it goes with no success. Then they say that I have to install a new version. That is not an acceptable reason for it to stop working.

They claim to have phone support, but they will only do email and live chat (even at the $500/year level), and their answers don't solve the problems. They have not been able to solve the intermittent backup failures.

You can't rename the backed up folders online. If you get a new computer (or even move directories), they will be backed up to a different location online; if you are using 60% of your backup space you will run out of space and have to upgrade OR delete all of your online files when you need them most! Not obvious until you've gotten "hooked" and upgrading is the only choice.

Summary

I would not recommend it and wish I never heard of it. I have wasted so much time on it.
