"This Hex editor did everything exactly as advertised."
Version: HxD Hex Editor 1.7.7
Pros
When you need to see ansii characters and only the hex is available, an editor like "HxD Hex Editor" has everything you need in a very user friendly package.
Cons
Not one thing would I change in this editor.
Summary
Top of the line. The fact is that CNET,,(the most trusted name I believe, in shareware and freeware downloads), proved once again how valuable they are to us all.

"Simply the best for free low-level editing"
Version: HxD Hex Editor 1.7.7
Pros
HxD is awesome! I can't count the number of times I've needed to view or edit a file or disk at the binary level, and every time I've been able to rely on HxD to get the job done. Granted, this isn't a program for which a lot of people will have a need, but for those of us that work with software at a lower level, it's SO nice to be able to turn to HxD and know you'll be able to do what you need to.
I love being able to change the column width and the encoding so easily, and even though I haven't yet had a use to open sections of RAM with HxD, I've got to admit that it's an impressive feature.Cons
None. 100% reliable in my experience.
Summary
One example where HxD saved me was when I needed to fix the master boot record of my new MacBook Pro about a year ago (still having buyers remorse over that...) because I was setting it up to do triple booting, and I was able to calculate the partition entries and enter them directly into the boot sector using HxD.
Like I said earlier, where HxD really shines is when working on tasks that a relatively small percentage of computer users will ever even attempt. But because of its solid performance and low memory usage, it's a tool I always make sure to install on every new build of Windows that I install for myself. -

"Did exactly what I wanted it to do"
Version: HxD Hex Editor 1.7.7
Pros
Reduced a binary file's size by allowing me to edit off spurious characters. Resulting .exe then installed because its file size properly matched the size that it expected as an installer.
Cons
Nada, zilch, zippo

"LIFESAVER! or at least CRAZYSAVING!"
Version: HxD Hex Editor 1.7.7
Pros
Everything about it?
Cons
Honestly, I can't think of one!
Summary
This program saves me from losing my mind on a regular basis. I think it's the best thing I've gotten for my computer... well, ever.
I write a blog and I'm long winded, so when I hit post and get an error followed by hitting back on my browser only to find the masterpiece I just spent an hour on has vanished, I kinda lose it.
A couple months ago, I decided that I was going to find a way to get my work back come hell or high water! And yes, I know there are plug-ins or whatever that will save your writing, but they don't save the stuff you lost BEFORE you installed it. After hours and hours searching online for a solution, I found this baby! I've used her many a time since, and every time I remember I have this amazing program it stops me mid-freakout! Then I smile, and find what I lost, copy & paste into word, quick find & replace for the misc. characters, and I'm done! Problem solved. It's simply genious! -

"Excellent Editor"
Version: HxD Hex Editor 1.7.7
Pros
Instant opening - even large files
Explorer context menu integration
Warning for changing file size on by default
Backup files created by defaultCons
Would like to have a hex calculator and/or a decimal-to-hex converter
Summary
I've used HexEdit for years, and never had a complaint. Had a problem getting it to work in 64bit Win7, so I went looking for something different. Now I wish I'd gone looking a long time ago - HexEdit (finally got it working) takes 10 seconds to load even a small file - up to 13 seconds for a large file (1GB). HxD Hex Editor loads even the large file literally in the blink of an eye. And HxD creates backup files by default, where in HexEdit that option has to be turned on if you want it. I still use HexEdit for its built-in hex calculator, but HxD is now my primary editor.
