"One Word... "Excellent!""
Version: HxD Hex Editor 1.7.7
Pros
Small,
Simple,
No install,
Fast!
I have been using HxD for years with no drama. I mainly use it for hex editing mainly for modifying saved game files amongst other things.
Also, You can open memory addressed to certain programs and modify :-)Cons
Cannot open locked files, but then how many programs can?
Summary
This program has let me do things like hack into explorer.exe and change the "Start" caption on the start menu to whatever I like, I have been able to hack into saved games and modify certain things to my liking, replace images in programs with my own, and I was even able to use the memory editing functionality to uninstall an msi file that would not uninstall or reinstall!
There are probably more advanced programs out there but this one is just so small, portable, easy to use! The perfect tool for the 'Sunday' hacker.
Also, if you want another handy hacking tool, take a look at these guys homepage and check out Propedit! Very simple but so very powerful! -
"Did not open in Windows 3.11"
Version: HxD Hex Editor 1.7.7
Pros
None - it wouldn't work.
Cons
It didn't work in the operating systems advertised.
Summary
The specs say that the program works with Windows 3.x operating systems, but my old Windows 3.11 for Workgroups operating system didn't recognize it as a Windows program.

"Great intuitive hex editor for windows"
Version: HxD Hex Editor 1.7.7
Pros
I just had to inspect some binary files for some simple corrections, so I tried out HxD. My needs were very simple, but HxD's UI seems very well thought out and intuitive (one of my pet peeves is badly designed UI's, it kills a program for me).
Cons
I didn't try anything too complicated, and didn't run into anything bad.
Summary
Great hex editor, very well designed. Recommended.

"Fast, lightweight and robust"
Version: HxD Hex Editor 1.7.7
Pros
Works well as a debugging tool for programmers. I use it's built-in RAM and disk-editor to develop software for embedded systems. The support for large files/disk and export function to Intel-Hex are especially useful.
Cons
Not really a cons, more a feature wish: a window that show data interpreted (as various data types) and a structure view would be nice additions.
Summary
Nice quality addition to my toolbox. Waiting for more features.

Cons
When you try to use it there are annoying gotchas and bugs
-
"Simple and straightforward. Just install and use it!"
Version: HxD Hex Editor 1.7.7
Pros
It's as simple to use as a hammer, so I didn't have to spend a lot of time learning its features. I just opened the editor, loaded my problem file and got 'er done!
Cons
None. There's really nothing about it that I don't like.
-

Version: HxD Hex Editor 1.7.7

Can't think of anything I Don't like.

"Works exactly as advertised"
Version: HxD Hex Editor 1.7.7
Pros
Works fast even on huge files. Does backups to recover from editing errors. Extremely straight forward.
Cons
Could use a prompt for first time users who aren't familiar with separate editing and display windows. Thenn again, not too many novices are going to venture into hex editing of a file.
Summary
Small and compact and no delay on loading even huge files. Other than first time use as noted in "Cons" this as a solid an editor as you could ask for.
-

None that I can think of.
Summary
Worthwhile.
